Fides_et_Ratio
I'm doing an independent study Spring semester this coming year, and I need a subject matter in order to convince the lone semi-orthodox prof to direct me (his specialty is in Scripture). I had been loosely planning to do a Theology of the Body sort of study, but I don't feel like that would be challenging enough--or taken too seriously. Since I have such a passion for the Liturgy I'm now thinking I need to draw up a more definite plan for my independent study--about the Liturgy. So... any good suggestions for my cirriculum? Which books, which authors, et. al.? Edited July 17, 2006 by Fides_et_Ratio
Era Might
"The Mass of the Western Rite" by Reverend Dom Fernand Cabrol. The whole thing is online: http://www.ewtn.com/library/LITURGY/MASS.TXT
Mitchell_b55
I can offer only two from my personal, and limited, experience. The Mass, Adrian Fortescue is very good for the history up until the reforms. The Spirit of the Liturgy, by the then-Cardinal Ratzinger may be helpful. History of the Liturgy This link has a fairly good list of books on Liturgical History. Laudate_Dominum
The must read for that field of study is "The Mass of the Roman Rite" by Josef Jungman. I hear the old edition in the two volume set is the best because later versions were heavily edited.
Fides_et_Ratio
everything good is always hard to find. thanks for the link, petrus. For the record, I own the following Liturgy-related texts: Feast of Faith by Cardinal Ratzinger God is Near Us by Cardinal Ratzinger The Spirit of the Liturgy by Cardinal Ratzinger Looking at the Liturgy by Aidan Nichols Letters Liturgical by Eltin Griffin and several Conciliar and Magisterial documents on the Liturgy. Justified Saint
Haven't read it, but I have heard many good things about Romano Guardini's Spirit of the Liturgy, which of course was a source of no small amount of inspiration to the Holy Father. Laudate_Dominum
Yeah, there are a ton of good books on the Liturgy in general, but I thought you were interested in the history of the Liturgy in particular?
Justified Saint
Jungman -- Isn't that the guy Glenn Olsen took apart?
I'm not sure, but it's quite possible. Not everything in Jungman's text is necessarily right on, but it is the major work on the subject and a must read for someone endeavoring to tackle the history of the Liturgy. But certainly this should not be the only text that one reads. It would be a good place to start though.
Justified Saint
I'll have to look up the references when I have the book near, but I remember Olsen being quite critical Jungman on a matter of liturgical history. Speaking of which, look up Olsen's book Beginning at Jersualem. This is not a book on liturgical history, but provides interesting insights on liturgical change and how it relates to the church's history and mission. Fides_et_Ratio
Yeah, there are a ton of good books on the Liturgy in general, but I thought you were interested in the history of the Liturgy in particular?
I am. But I don't own any books on the history of the Liturgy, only stuff in general, hence my request of good reading material. The professor I am hoping to oversee my study is not a liturgical scholar, nor is there one at the University I'm attending and I want good solid reading on the history (or at least the majority of it, and would like to be aware of any questionable sources).
