First confession!?!

Ok, I am young in the church and I am still catching up on some stuff but I have the feeling my first confession was not done right :ohno:

I've read all the formulas in the books and went somewhat prepared.
I told the priest that I am a convert and it was confession number 1 and I could have used a hand with it, but if you think I got a hand well no :annoyed:

He rushed it and took a phone call on a mobile phone while I was in the confessional  and then said lets speed this up I am due for a golf game. :idontknow: He cut me short, game me a penance and sent me packing.

About all I got out of the experience was the rosary beads the local Carmelite nuns wanted my mum to have, blessed by the priest, and a bad taste in my mouth.

Having read the other thread I am really wondering now. I am thankful that my mum was too ill to leave this morning, as going to Mass would not have "felt right" at all.

So am I right or are my expectations too high. :idontknow:

Thy Geekdom Come

Pray for the priest and go to another who is more serious about his ministry next time.

That is totally ridiculous. I am sorry you had to go through this the first time.

Actually, I still think it may be valid, despite the distracted nature of the priest. He said the words, gave the blessing, gave you a penance... but I would go to another. I am really sorry to hear about that. Dont worry, not all priests are like that.

If he said "I absolve you from you sins, in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy spirit" and you did your best to confess your sins then the confession was valid and is not for you to worry about. Trust that your sins are forgiven. The grace is not dependent on the holiness of the priest or how well he does the confession. He has some worrying to do in my mind but likely won't. The cell phone thing in the confessional is an abomination! Very sad.

By the way it does not "feel right" because you were cheated out of the feeling you get in a good form confession. But Christianity is not all about feelings. It is about grace. There are many times in life we do not feel God's grace, but it is there.

Thanks again. Its good to know that my "gut feeling" is right again. :)
I am going to get in contact with the local cath communication area and see if they know where I could find a regular confessor/spiritual director for vocation discernment purposes and see if I can find a :priest: that will do it right.

By the way, if there are any Brisbane based priests here who's parish is close to a train line and could spare me a little part of their time every six weeks or so please PM me :notworthy2: . Thank you. :)
