Is wasting food considered a sin?

Is wasting food for whatever reason (like, its gone bad or you don't feel like eating it) a mortal sin?

Obviously if food is bad you don't have to eat it. If you buy food or request food with the deliberate intention of not eating it then it would be a venieal sin...however if someone was to say put on a large amount of food and then you cannot eat it through no fault of your own then that's not a sin.
