Nathan
I'm thinking about majoring in Classics next year (specifically, Greek and Latin language/literature), but my knowledge of the field at the moment is not too deep. I am wondering: Are early Christian works -- mainly the Greek New Testament, but also the Septuagint, the Vulgate, and the Greek/Latin writings of the Church Fathers -- considered an important part of the Classics field? I know that a few Classics scholars have translated the New Testament and other early Christian writings with commentaries on them -- Richmond Lattimore, E.V. Rieu, and Willis Barnstone come to mind -- but I'm unclear as to whether classicists engaged in early Chrisian writings are actually working within the Classics field or if they are doing so as a kind of side-interest. Any insight you folks could give me would be great. Thanks, Nathan

Socrates
I wasn't a Classics Major, but I know at Christendom College they were definitely a major part of the Classics curriculum.
ThyWillBeDone
I think it really depends on where you are studying classics. I am sure a Catholic institution would place great significance on them, while many secular institution will focus mostly on greek and roman works like, Homer, Virgil, Seneca etc. But I could be wrong, if I was back at the Seminary I would ask my greek prof. The man in a genius in the field of classical languages (and I guess modern languages too he speaks like 7) God Bless Edited June 27, 2006 by ThyWillBeDone
Thy Geekdom Come
The Christian texts mostly aren't Classics at FUS...I've done a little Church Latin, but not much.
