God Conquers
Ya, the main reason Galileo got in trouble wasn't for scientific, or even personal problems in his relationship with the pope... It was the fact that he kinda mocked scripture in his treatise. That kind of thing is never looked upon kindly. This is the main difference between Galileo and Copernicus in their discoveries... Copernicus reconciled his discoveries with the faith, Galileo didn't try and ended up making alot of enemies.
EcceNovaFacioOmni
I think she meant Galileo... but it took me a minute to figure that out.
Yeah I just figured that out. I apologize. I am fairly certain I read somewhere that Galileo wanted the Church to promulgate his theories. It's a good thing they did not... Never heard anything about the Bible but it could be true. Edited June 26, 2006 by thedude
God Conquers
It was ALL about the bible: St. Robert Bellarmine wrote on April 12 1615 to one of Galileo's preistly advocates, Paolo Foscarini telling him he should have been more careful when dealing with sacred scripture. Galileo stated something to the effect that either his experiments are false or Sacred Scripture is... peeving off every single theologian of the day. The Galileo debate is bound up with the debate of the time concerning literal vs. contextual translation of scripture. Galileo stuck his nose in where it did not belong, when he needn't have done so. He should have asserted the truth of scripture while hypothesizing that the earth revolves around the sun like every good Catholic scientist, knowing that the CHurch would figure itself out instead of trying to cause trouble. zwergel88
Wait a second... there's a book claiming that the earth does not revolve around the sun?? That's wacko. This is the year 2006, I think that its been definatively proven that things revolve around the sun.
phatcatholic
Robert Sungenis, Ph.D., and Robert Bennett, Ph.D. have released their book, Galileo Was Wrong, on cdrom. The book is 1000+ pages of scientific evidence supporting and explaining geocentrism. Anyone who takes the time to read this book will come away with a different perspective on geocentrism, and will have to wonder how we could have been fooled so easily for so long.
