passerby
Hi everyone, It seems that every women's religious order I look at either have education or healthcare as one of their main focuses. Are there any orders that don't focus on these? Blessings, J
magnificat
Hi J, Well, the Sisters of Life don't really do either in the traditional sense of teaching in schools or running hospitals. They are active in some evanglization (like giving talks) and do serve pregnant women in their Holy Respite mission. There are many communities that have apostolates besides just teaching or health care, but many charisms (like that of St. Francis) embrace a multitude of apostolates including those two. I think the Sisters of Life are unique because none of the sisters teach in schools and none of them work in hospitals. Hope that helps.
HisChild
Sisters servants of the Eternal Word are involved in retreat work. The Panhandle Franciscans are involved in teaching but you don't have to be a teacher to be accepted.
HollyDolly
The Sisters of the Christian Retreat and the Sisters of La Retraite, both French do some teaching and mainly conduct retreats. They don't have convents in the USA,but do have convents in England. The Daughters of St.Paul run book stores and do printing. Many of the cloistered orders make rosaries, altar breads and do other work like baking, etc. TheParish Visitors of Mary Immaculate and Sisters,Home Visitors of Mary take parish census, visit people in their homes and do other work. Many orders nowadays do more than teach and nurse to support themselves.I believe the Little Sisters of Jesus work even in factories and such. Hope this helps. Go the advance search and you will see many different categories of ministeries. Pick the ones you are interested in and see what orders come up. Are there any orders that don't focus on these? Blessings, J
That has been one of my dilemmas in searching for religious orders, too. So many focus on education and health care (though this is wonderfully needed!) Here are some that I've written/spoken to/visited that don't focus specifically on education/health care: The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal Franciscan Sisters, Third Order Regular of Penance of the Sorrowful Mother Handmaids of Reparations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Missionaries of Charity Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary Sisters of Life Sister Servants of the Eternal Word I found most of these orders through this website: Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (Great website!!!) sadora
Oops -- actually the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Alma do have their main apostolate as Education/Health Care! My apologies! But the other ones, at least, I think aren't mainly Education/Health Care.
magnificat
There's also the Daughters of St. Paul who do more media/publishing/journalism type work.

stlmom
Whoops! I just remembered these Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver who have a house in St. Louis. They publish a newsletter and act as sort of "middlemen" (women?) for missionary needs. They do not actually do traditional missionary work.
