HollyDolly
: Well I was thinking of going to see the movie maybe Friday or Saturday. The impression I get from the movie is this.It appears that these Franciscans(at least the habit looks that way) run an orphanage in Mexico that is poor..Jack Black is one of the friars,a laybrother who does the cooking and is terrible at it. Anyhow he decides to become a wrestler to help the orphans. And yes,in the one shot where he flexes his butt in his strechy pants,it does seem as if he is trying to impress the sister, who seems to have a horrifid look on her face as he does it. It looks silly enough. And may offend a few,but we will just have to watch it.but it can't be anyworse than some such movies that have come out in recent years. I wont see it because of that
The nun does nothing with him. He says stupid stuff like "maybe we can break our vows with eachother some time". But like they don't actually do anything and you don't get the idea that they ever will. It just makes Jack Black sound stupid.
Oik
I'm glad I have read through this thread. Now I know basically what I'm up against. I haven't completely decided whether to see it or not.
isilzha
I'll wait and see what you guys think of it before I decide to go see it (of course it also depends on whether or not my friends want to see it too, but I'm sure they will).
kamiller42
Here's more information from Jack Black.
"He loves the Lord but he also secretly loves Lucha Libre, Mexican wrestling, the excitement and the thrills of that life," Black says about his character, who's tormented "because priests are not supposed to wrestle."
I guess this means he is a priest. Curious about those condemning change of vocations, what do you think about The Sound of Music?

scardella
In your opinions, was it blasphemous, mocking celibacy, etc.?
Socrates
In your opinions, was it blasphemous, mocking celibacy, etc.?
I wouldn't say it was blasphemous. Nacho's infatuation with the pretty nun was a subject of humor, but it was never really in bad taste, nor did it really become mean-spirited mockery. The director was Mormon, and it was evident his understanding of Catholicism was a bit weak. (For instance, he seemed to be under the impression that all monks are priests. In the context of his situation and character, it would seem unlikely that Nacho would be ordained a priest.) Anyway, I though the movie was basically silly and innocuous, and mildly funny. The humor was much like Napoleon Dynamite, but wasn't as funny in my opinion. (Napoleon was a movie you really can't repeat). If you liked Napoleon Dynamite, you might like this one. If you hated N.D., you probably won't care much for this one either.
KatS
I've read about the "wrestling priest" ... well now that y'all mention it I think he was a priest. I think it was in a Catholic Digest magazine, and of course everyone who knew him was just amazed that he was a wrestling priest!! Considering the vitriol against Catholics in plain ol' prime time TV, the criticisms of the movie sound mild... so I may hafta check it out too Edited June 20, 2006 by KatS
zealousrap
I loved it. I went with Sweetpea and Keighters...this is me holding my nachos next to a nacho libre sign. I have been saying this to a lot of people...it's not as quotable as napoleon dynamite, but certain scenes are very memorable. My favorite scenes include: a baptism (hands down my favorite), corn, 2 mini goat men, rock climbing, and much much more
