Benedictine Communities/Orders

Hi everyone!

I've been lurking here for a while. I was wondering if anyone knew of any Benedictine communities who still wear a habit. I've been looking at Benedictines, but all the ones I've found on the internet have ditched the habit. Could anyone help me?

Blessings,
J

Hey J,

Just passing by? :)

I believe there are some in Europe still. PP started this thread, there might be some good info for you in it.

The Benedictine Nuns that I know of that wear the habit are: Our Lady of the Rock, Shaw Island (WA), Abbey of Regina Laudis (Bethlehem, CT), Monastery of St. Walburga (Colorado), Benedictine Nuns in Petersham, MA. Also, the Solesmes Benedictines in Westfield, VT. All of these groups have websites but I don't know them off the top of my head. I hope this helps!

I don't know if you are a guy or gal, I'm assuming gal for now. Actually there are quite a few communities of Benedictines that wear a habit in the USA. Check this link:

God bless!

Hello Passerby,

When I was with Buffalo Dominicans, I met Sr. Mary Magdalen with the Benedictine in Vermont. She gave me their information so here it is:

Benedictine Monastery of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
4103 Vt, route 100
Westfield VT 05874

Tel: 802 744-6525

Vocation email: vocations@ihmwestfield.com

Website though under construction still has some valuable information.

Cheers

DM

P.S. There is Canadian Connection. There Prioress is from Ottawa. She was a Benedictine from the Deux Montages in Quebec.

Benedictines of Mary Queen of Apostles wear the full habit, are traditional and I believe it is their goal to give priests a place of rest and be of service to priests. They did have a small website but it is not up as of yet since the move to Missouri from Pennsylvania. I would encourage you to contact them, they are amazing. I do not have a phone number or an email but do have the address. I believe the Prioress is Sister Therese...trying to get that one right but not 100%

The address is:

Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus
1400 NE 42nd Terrace
Kansas City Missouri
64116

Also...found an article that may give you a look inside of their way of living..hope it works! http://catholickey.org/index.php3?gif=news...article_id=3947

Don't the Benedictine nuns at Clyde in MO wear a habit?
Yes, they do, although a quite simple one--the professed sisters wear black, white or a combination in dresses or skirts and blouses. Their postulants and novices wear simple plain lay clothing, more in keeping with the Rule of St. Benedict that no one should be given the habit until ready to make vows. I have a great respect for this congregation, sorry I forgot to include them in my previous post.

Don't know them personally, but the website always looked neat.

Also, in case you are a guy after all, I've heard of a Benedictine monastery in Norcia, Italy, with Latin, Our Lady, and the New Evangelization. (Yes, and habits too of course!)

J is a girl. In the interest of Internet security I'll refrain from telling you what the J stands for but rest assured it is a girl name. :)

Dear J,

OLAM Dad has pointed you to a thread I began (which you're very welcome to jump in on if you're interested in anything to do with Benedictine life :)), but I can give you some links to Benedictine houses I know in Europe.

St. Hildegard's Abbey, Ruedesheim, Germany.

St. Cecilia's Abbey, Isle of Wight, UK.

Stanbrook Abbey, Worcester (soonish moving to Yorkshire), UK.

Colwich Abbey, Staffordshire, UK.

Tyburn Convent, London, UK.

Curzon Park Abbey, Chester, UK.

These are roughly (very roughly) in order of how well I know the House. I'd encourage you to click away and take a look around. Of course there are many Benedictine monasteries and convents in Europe. Certainly all those I've listed here wear the full Benedictine habit (although I believe Tyburn's may be slightly different, reflecting their history which is very different from that of the others) - I can't off the top of my head think of a Benedictine House where they don't.

Oh wait, yes I can. St. Lioba's Convent, Egmond-Binnen, the Netherlands. They have what I think is a monk's habit - no veil. I think (my life is so bizarre these days I just don't know anymore!) I'm going on a visit there in a couple of months' time with some friends. There are Benedictine Houses in the Netherlands that do have the full habit, I believe; a congregation of Perpetual Adoration, I think.

I hope this helps a little. If I can help more in any way then feel free to pm me.

Love and prayers,

PP

Hi all!

Thank you so much for your help. This is such interesting reading for me!

Sorry for not specifying before, but yes, I am a girl (thanks for clarifying, OLAM Dad). I sometimes forget that even though I know who I am, others (through the anonymity of the internet) don't. Definitely different than conversing face to face.

Does anyone have any idea why any orders (not necessarily Benedictines) have "dumped" the habit? Does it have to do with their charism?

Blessings,
J

I think it is kinda interesting... but there are other reasons besides these though...

Whilst the Rule specifies what monks should wear (Benedict wrote it for monks; it was "adapted" for nuns about a century after his death), it also gives the superior the leeway to modify it if he has a good reason (which nearly everyone has - does anyone know of Benedictines who have to take their knives off before going to bed these days?). Benedictine "charisms" vary wildly so it's possible that a superior would choose to not wear the habit based upon the work that the House (particularly an active one) did.

However, I think this only really comes into play with more active Benedictine communities. I can't think of a contemplative one (or even an active one, for that matter!) that doesn't have a habit.

FutureNunJMJ - I found the article you linked to a little blaze, especially with regards to the responses given by "Peter and Paul Ministeries". A quick glance at some of the other articles on their website furrow the brow. It's not so much what they say (although one of the responses given on the page linked concerned me greatly) but the way they say it.

Love and prayers,

PP
