Harry Potter

JRR Tolkin was a faithful Catholic. Lord of the rings shows how evil can control us if we become attached to worldly things. You want to know something Adam Sandler is closer to the devil have you seen his crudness to humans.

well, i'm not one to judge, but he was the star of little nicky, in which he played the son of the devil. but heck....um, wrong choice of words, lets rethink that.....but HEY! I liked the movie and Adam Sandler. :P

anyways, i was skeptical about Harry Potter before, i used to think that the most offensive thing about them is that i saw adults reading them, and if kids read them it's fine so long as they don't become wiccans . at least the kids are reading. i'd let my kids ( if i ever had them) read HP before i would ever let them read the Left Behind series, at least they wouldn't be confused about their faith. but after reading some of the stuff in the phorum i'm begining to rethink this.

however i do have a question, I used to love to read fantasy books when i was younger ( ok i do now too, just don't have the time to do it), for example stuff by Mercedes Lackley, i'm intrested in reading LOTR's. and i love mangas/anime like Magic Knight Rayearth and Sailor Moon, and play RPGs (ie Final Fantasy) which often have magic in them. What about classics like King Author and Merlin type stuff? does this make them inheritly sinful, even if i can distiquish it from reality?

Like just about EVERYTHING, Harry Potter stories can be harmful when there is a lack of parental guidance and participation. I would not agree with all of cappie's 10 points in his initial post, but I do agree with many.

The greater danger facing kids today is TV. That medium continually undermines Christian values and moral principals but people rarely burn them, turn them off, or monitor and control what their children watch.

Watch 3 episodes of "Friends" or "Will & Grace" with your 12 yearold, and then tell me if Harry Potter stories scare you as much.

I did not realise that the Harry Potter thing should cause so much debate though it is interesting. One of my points was that our Cardinal Pell, Archbishop of Sydney who is also a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is not worried by the books and has been seen reading the books to children. I was wondering if we are not becoming too reactionary????
