I got a question, are the Dioceses within the US, just Roman Catholic dioceses?  If so, are there Byzantine Dioceses?  Does the USCCB cover all the Rites?

Pal your question is difficult some rights have chosen to be under the authority of the local latin bishop. Some have territorial Bishops who are the local Bishop of a who region of the country [for that Rite] like New England, the South, etc. Some of the smaller rites are still governed by the Bishops in the "Old Country". and now among Byzantines there is a movement to get all Byzantines (Ruthenians, Ukrainians, Russians, Serbians, Melkites) to join together in the United/Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which is in communion with Rome, but not at this time recognized as a Rite although almost certainly in time all Byzantine Catholics in the US will belong to it and then it can become one. Did that answer your question or confuse you more?

There is also a movement in this country for the Pope to appoint a Patriarch of the United States who would hold authority over all Eastern Catholics of whatever jurisdiction, which would greatly cut down on confusion. Plus maany younger Eastern Rite Catholics are throwing their arms up in disgust over the battles the ethnic and precedence battles their bishops are fighting and just joining the Eastern Rite.

Nothing I've said applies to the Maronites.

Their Sacraments are always valid, but only licit to recieve if their isn't a Western or Eastern Rite Catholic Church available. The Orthodox can always recieve in our Churches if they want too, but some of them especially the Russians deny that we are even Christians, so it's considered best to not Commune in their churches unless they are the only Sacraments available.

okay, so I couldn't go there and receive Communion? Or could I go there just to check it out? Or could I only go when there is not another Roman Catholic Mass available to go to? (Which would be hard to do since there is like 10 Roman Catholic Churches in my area.)

You answered my question right.

Latin Rite = Largest (most common) Rite, right?

Just curious, are all Byzantine parishes more reverence and orthodox than Latin parishes?

Jess,

You can always go to another Denom's church to check things out(the no Communion from the Orthodox thing is really their rule not ours, we let them recieve in our churches, you should ask the Orthodox Father if he would let you recieve). Be sure you've fulfilled your Mass obligation at a Roman Rite or Eastern Rite Church tho'. Our Byzantines worship much the same as the Greeks, they both use the liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, maybe you could check out an Eastern Rite Church and fulfill your oblagation and satisfy your curiosity all at once.

There are three diocese of the Byz. Rite. There is a Byz. Church in St. Pete that some friends from the council want me to go to with them... They think that I would make a good priest... The one in St. Pete belongs to the Dicese of NY. The Byz. Rite fell in schism a few hundred years ago, and then came home to Rome... Hence, why they still have the old Mass. I do want to go to a Mass there soon, but it's a bit of a drive.

see: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04312d.htm

As for Greek Orthodox... if you go to their Mass to check it out, you'll still need to go to a Catholic Mass... and don't partake in their Eucharist.

Check out http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06752a.htm

it has quite a bit on the subject.

Your Servant,

ironmonk

hyper, I can't go to Eastern Rite, we don't have one in my area. That's why I asked about the Eastern Orthodox church because we do have one in my city. I don't even know how to locate an Eastern Rite church in my area. Any ideas?

Btw, thanks for the info, hyper. Really helped out. :)

ironmonk, thanks for the link! ;)

there are 700,000,000 Latin Riters. They are the largest Rite.

No, I'm certain ALL Byz parishes aren't more reverential, but most of the Western Liturgical abuses are unheard of in the east (except the ones that are part of their liturgy already, like standing during the consecration).

Interesting side note in the Parish I've been attending we prostrate ourselves, HEAD to the floor and knees to the Chest before the Blessed Sacrament.
