During Mass

Ok, so my boyfriend and I went to his cousin's First Communion last week to a church we had never been to. After Communion and before the final blessing the choir director announced that it was the Priest's birthday ans then started singing "Happy Birthday".....uhhh, I was totally disgusted by this. Should I be? Mass was NOT over! :idontknow: I have been going to church a VERY long time and have NEVER seen this. Wow, I was blown away.... :pinch:

Actually, there were alot of first that I saw there.... A guy with his wife and kid, he walked in with a HAT on and kept it on!! One of the ushers had to tell him to take it off, then he acted mad when the told him. He had to leave then come back. Must have been having a bad hair day?!? Dude, a hat?? HELLO!!!

Then there was this guy behind us who sang SO loud. Oh, and we are in the Toledo diocese and the Bishop wrote a letter (about the Robinson case) that had to be read at every mass. So while he was reading the letter, the guy behind us was commenting the whole time on it. About how he didn't agree and stuff. He was not being quiet either, I mean no whispering just talking like normal...wow, very disrespectful! I wanted to turn around and slug him, everyone around could hear him plain as day. Very interesting....I'll be glad to get back to my parish this week!

Sometimes, it's best to just focus on Jesus and the sacrament, and not worry about all the stuff out of your control. It doesn't do any good.

Just focus on the fact that you are about to/or just received the Body and Blood of Jesus, and don't worry about anything else. :)

"and don't worry about anything else"

dont worry about the sacrilege and blashpemies being committed against Our Lord, fugeit about it.

Or, be disgusted as you should be, make reparations, and write letters and talk to people to try to correct it.

Singing happy birthday to the priest is sacralidge and blasphemy? Get a grip.

If you're assisting at Mass already and it's about over, what else can you do?

Commit sacrilege yourself or stay and lose your faith or you can just stay and ignore it. Sometimes the last is the only good option.

I honestly wouldn't get too focused on it. It's not something I think one should write the bishop over and Lord knows I've written ours enought times. In fact I don't think it is all bad during the anouncements. You may but I don't.

It happened at our parish during the announcements. It was not an organized response but a spontanious response by memebers of the parish wishing our parish priest a happy birthday. I don't get it. Wishing someone a happy birthday is a polite and natural response in our society especially if it is someone who you love.

The sheep celebrating their shepherd on his special day seems natural to me.

I think it was even before the announcements, can't remember. But, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. I just found it odd. We probably will never go there again, we just went for my bf's cousin's First Communion. Neither of us had been there before that. I was just curious if anyone else had come across this ever. :saint:

I agree, you should wish your priest a happy birthday. But I just think if you do it, do it some other time, like after mass or something. Not while mass is still going on, I dunno, I guess I think it's irreverant because Jesus is on the altar all. Kinda draws away from the whole reason we are at mass. But, that's just my opinion. ^_^

I think it's nice that they sang to him.

Thank you so much for mentioning this point. It's wonderful to wish your priest a happy birthday, but in the context of the Mass; I don't think so >:( :annoyed: That is a serious issue because it does draw attention from the real reason we are at Mass. I wish people would stop thinking about themselves during the celebration of the Mass. This kind of self gradification is inappropriate during what is supposed to be about our love of God. If you feel the need to sing to your priest, wait until afterwards so you don't draw attention away from Christ. For crying out loud people, the Mass is not about us, but about Jesus Christ. :maddest: :maddest: :maddest:

Sorry, that's my rant for the day.

It should not have been done. Probably done in invincible ignorance, still wrong. Probably should not be brought up in an open forum like this.

*Is tired of bad liturgies, and even more tired of people whinning about them*
