If going to Mass was made illegal would it be a sin to go? Of course not.

Does legalized abortion make the act unsinful? Of course not.

These are two extreme examples to justify my 'no' vote. :)

The sin is not in the card playing itself.

The sin is in breaking the law. There is no time when the law would need to be broken for the "greater" good of card playing.

The sin is in breaking the law. But there are restraints and rules for that. Give to Caeser what is his and give to God what is his. But if the law goes against God then you have to go with God's law, I think. But I am pretty sure that card playing doesn't really fall in this category.

You have your just laws, unjust laws, and just plain wierd laws...

If such a thing like this was made law, I'd probably see no problem in breaking it as it would go with the rest of the wierd laws... Yah know...

Such as showing a horror film in Glendale CA on Thurs, Fri, Sat, & Sun is illegal...
Speaking English instead of American in Illinois...
Taking a bath without a medical prescription in Massachusetts...
ect...

I just see it as too silly a law to take seriously

:ninja:

Why would breaking the law in this case be a sin?

That seems ridiculous.

My thoughts exactly.

Because if obedience to a law does not cause us to sin, then we ought to obey that law. Christ told Pilate that whatever authority he had was given to him, and it is the same for all government. The fact of the matter is, breaking a law that need not be broken is an act of rejecting the authority that God has granted unto the government. If the law causes you to sin, it is your obligation to follow it. If you can follow the law without extraordinary duress, then you ought to follow it out of respect for the authority of God.

Your Brother In Christ,

Jeff

I think of this as the speed limit. I have such a hard time going 5 over anywhere I go and I need to stop. Even though it may seem harmless, but the law is set and we need to obey it.

A priest told me it was a mortal sin going 20 over
It was a venial for going about 5-15 over I don't know...But it was one of the two.

Who would ever know?
