Is this an MOD where you would be on the front lines? Is this a good field to go into? Will it benefit me in any way later in life?

As a pseudo former spec ops soldier I would say go hide. The army is evil, the theopoliciatl system of salvation from oppresive military action is a sin. Just war went out with the Model -T

I'm assuming you mean MOS, not MOD.

In my experience (10 years in the Army) comm guys are not typically on the front lines but do spend a LOT of time in the field both in peace and in war. They don't do a lot of work necessarily but they are out in the sticks sitting around a lot.

What exactly is a 'pseudo former spec ops soldier'? Did you used to play Rainbow Six or something? Or maybe you've read all of Tom Clancy's books?

The military is not evil.

The military is a tool much like a knife, it can be used for both bad and good. Military is needed. A strong military protects innocent people. A strong military is what keeps mad men at bay.

Please, when trying to make a point to say something like "military is evil", please stop and actually think about what you are about to post and if you do post it, please research the Church documents, Catechism, and Scripture first.
CCC 2310
Public authorities, in this case, have the right and duty to impose on citizens the obligations necessary for national defense.

Those who are sworn to serve their country in the armed forces are servants of the security and freedom of nations. If they carry out their duty honorably, they truly contribute to the common good of the nation and the maintenance of peace.107

CCC 2311
Public authorities should make equitable provision for those who for reasons of conscience refuse to bear arms; these are nonetheless obliged to serve the human community in some other way.108
For our brethern in the military, I thank you for what you do. Please forgive the misguided (yet well meaning in regards to the value of human life) slander of your profession.

God Bless,
ironmonk

I think the military is cool. Being of a militant class can be an extremely noble and manly thing. Certainly unjust wars are evil, but the military is, as iron monk said, a tool. And I suppose in this country the military exists mainly to protect people. What can be more noble or manly than risking your life to protect innocent people? And many saints write about how it is good to be under obedience. I realize that the discipline and chain of command in the military isn't the same as religious obedience, but it seems to me that there is a virtue in being totally loyal, respectful and obedient to a superior officer regardless of your personal feelings toward the man or his orders. I've always thought that aspect of the being a soldier was really neat.

Oh, and some of my favourite stories in the Bible are about battle and heroes and stuff. Its awesome.

although I must note that I've never actually served in the military and I'm thinking more in abstract terms. When I think of being a soldier I think more of old time warrior and brave heart kind of stuff. But the real point is just to repeat what ironmonk said about the military being a tool, its not in itself something evil but can be a very noble and good thing.

dont join the military its evil.

It's even more evil to let people attack the innocent, the weak, our freedom, and our dignity as human beings all in the name of pacificism. Sometimes, military action is used for bad things, but it is also used for good things, like protecting the freedom and security of innocent civilians. Some of my guy friends as well as one of my female friends are either contemplating or planning on military service in the future and one of my neighbors was in the army. They do it because they love America and want to protect our freedom, not because they want to commit evil acts. Also, if the military is so evil, what about saints, like St. Joan of Arc who earned their wings by becoming soldiers?

If it weren't for the military we'd all be saying "Sieg Heil" to the Rising Sun....

Hmmm. I'm not sure what to make of this thread. I can say that the Army is never home, though. If you want some sort of normal family life or anything like that then I would definitely say go Air Force. I'm in the Air Force (stationed near Tokyo). The comments about the military being evil were a little rude. It's a job, but it is also a lifestyle thing. I don't agree with a lot of things the military does or goes about things, but there is the whole loyalty and rank thing. I didn't come into the military to kill people and ruin peoples' lives, but to make a good life for my family and serve my country at the same time. Thank you to everyone who supports the military and realizes that we're not just a big bunch of baby killers. It's much appreciated. The military life is very difficult. Constantly moving, going to the desert, doing things you don't necessarily agree with. Harder than civilian life. So please think carefully before you go bashing something you obviously don't understand.

oh, and as far as the lifestyle thing goes.. my brother in law joined the Navy soon after he married my sister and it was supposed to just be a four year thing but he's been in it for like 12 years now cuz they like it. They have a nice house and lots of friends who are also military families I suppose.
I'm sure its different for everyone, but its safe to say that some people like it as a career so people who say its terrible probably just had a bad experience.

I'm currently in the Army and I can tell you that if you have the ASVAB scores to go into Satellite Communications, don't do it! Go into intel, it will leave many more possibilities open to you. A lot of guys I know picked one job they thought would be cool when they went to the MEPs station and ended up regretting it for years because they changed thier mind. The thing you have to understand is that military life can get very monotonous. That's why you have to pick an MOS that gives you breathing room. Intel Analyst, Signals Intelligence, or Human Intelligence are all great choices because you aren't confined into doing ONE thing or even confined to doing a few things. With Intel Analyst if you get your degree while youre in, afterwords you can get a ton of really cool jobs in DC. It's basically the catch-all job where you can do whatever you want, in the field or in an office. Signals intelligence works with gathering information through all kinds of neat means, so you'd be doing satellite stuff, radio stuff, listening in on terrorists, etc. And then human intel is great if you want to learn languages, travel, interrogate, meet different kinds of people. And then after you do that you can go into counter intelligence if youre looking at the FBI. The CIA is a human intelligence agency so having that would put you in really good with them, and if you had a foreign relations degree as well you'd be ahead of 95% of people trying to get in. So if you have the scores pick an intel job. I'm an intel analyst, and it's really made all the difference for me. I've only been in 2 years and I've seen stuff 99.999% of the people out walking on the streets will never see. I came in to get my bachelors degree(I was still figuring out whether or not God was calling me to the priesthood when I enlisted) and I'll walk away with some truly amazing experiences. To wrap it up, if you really want to see what's going on in the world, and I'm not talking about the junk on CNN or in the newspaper, then take my advice. PM me if you have any more questions

PS: I was assuming you were going in as enlisted, but if you do have your degree its even better because as an officer in intelligence you'll get a job with basically any agency you want as long as your record is clean. And the stuff you do will be even more sweet.
