Da Vinci Code

Our newspaper published this article yesterday:
The Christian Civic League of Maine, in preparation for the upcoming release of the movie "The Da Vinci Code," is calling for a boycott of all Maine movie theaters, even those that aren't going to show the controversial movie.

Executive Director Michael S. Heath, citing the anticipated May 19 release of the Ron Howard directed movie, as well as the "current deplorable state of the movies in general," said he is calling on all people of good will to avoid Maine's movie theaters indefinitely. He encourages people to call or write theaters, asking that "The Da Vinci Code" not be shown.

Instead, Heath said, theaters should return to showing "wholesome and edifying movies."

"Adding to the need for a boycott," Heath said. "Is the current trend in movies to exalt and extol every form of immorality and vice, while relegating all that is noble in man to insignificance. Among the virtues and human emotions which find no admittance to the movie theaters of Maine are honor, love, duty and patriotism. At the same time, ever-worsening portrayals of violence, and distorted views of human sexuality, are welcomed with open arms, as audiences are asked to take delight in all that is inhuman and unnatural."

Former actor and current movie critic for the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel, J.P. Devine, said religious groups attacking movies they don't agree with is nothing new. He recalled "The Moon is Blue," being condemned by the Catholic Church in 1953 because the word virgin was used in the movie.

He said such boycotts are "preposterous."

But, he said, not necessarily a bad thing for the movie being boycotted.

"Hollywood loves it, there is nothing they'd like better than to have a movie boycotted," said Devine, of Waterville.

"I say go for it, Michael, bring the masses, get people holding their little signs, walking around outside the theater, and watch the box office go through the roof."

Heath is hopeful others will join in the boycott and it will be effective.

"People are waking up," he said.

In "The Da Vinci Code" cryptic clues in some of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery which, movie promotional materials proclaim, could rock the foundations of Christianity.

The movie is listed as a coming attraction on Internet sites for Regal Cinemas, which has a theater in Augusta, and Flagship Cinemas, which has a theater in Waterville.

It won't be playing at Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, but only because it will be playing at Flagship already, not because of the threat of a boycott.

Ken Eisen, a co-founder of Railroad Square, questioned why the Christian Civic League is targeting just movie theaters, and not bookstores as well, because the movie is based on a book with the same name.

"Boycotts are a legitimate thing to call for, but this is kind of a silly one," Eisen said. "I hope most of their members realize how silly it is. Boycotting something, before you've seen it, doesn't make sense."

Heath said he has not seen the movie, nor read the book. His criticisms, he said, are based on reviews and others' descriptions of the book.

Heath said "The Da Vinci Code" movie poses extreme spiritual danger because it misleads viewers on the most crucial issues confronting mankind -- the person, character, and mission of Jesus Christ and the need for all men and women to accept Christ as their personal savior.

Owners of other central Maine movie theaters couldn't be reached for comment, or declined to comment, Monday evening.

We're Catholics, right? God's Delta Force. (Ever listen to Fr. Corapi?) And what does Special Ops do best? Covert action - secret, effective, take no prisoners. So while the Christian Civic League is rallying its troops to protest this movie, who will commit with me to an hour of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament? Any Catholic Church will do, any hour that you can spare. Offer a rosary or Mercy Chaplet in reparation, and tell Jesus that we know who He is and that we love Him unreservedly.

I am an active member in God's army. The war is won, but the battle rages on. Let us give honor to our King! Let us offer our hearts in place of those lost as collateral damage, and pray for their return!

I believe that action is best taken on our knees, where our weakness is God's strength. Catholics, unite under the banner of Christ!

Christ is risen! Alleluia!

If The Da Vinci Code doesn't make enough money, they won't show it in as many places... and it will not be shown as long either...

Isn't Ice Age 2 and Over the Hedge supposed to be coming out as well?

That line made me snicker a bit.

Thats a good idea. This article needs to be bumped.

Us Catholic have friends in high places, and who are we to abandon their generosity.

I think it is also important to pray to certain saints.

St. Mary Magdalene
St. Peter

St. Clement of Rome, champion against the Gnostics
St. Ireneous, " "
St. Polycarp
(and whatever other martyrs who died for the ONE TRUE FAITH)
St. Athanasius, chamion against the Arians

The Holy Hours will probably do well to hinder those who are slightly curious. Draw and force others away.

It will also prepare our spirits when we have to engage those who fall for its fallacy. (Of course, when you pray, don't keep thinking of refutations and arguements)

SHALOM
