dressing modestly

I have a question about dressing modestly.

I read some where also that Padre Pio would send people away(that had come for confession) if they weren't dressed modestly, which meant no skirts above the knee..among other things.

My question is...why does it seem okay to wear shorts that're above the knee but a skirt the same length isn't considered okay? Aren't both unmodest in dressing?

Thy Geekdom Come

If a girl wearing shorts happens to fall over or something, a guy would still have a hard time accidentally seeing anything.

If a girl wearing a skirt were to do the same...

Yeah...

Jennie wears skirts above the knee (only a few inches at most, she's too short for it to be really short on her)...doesn't bother me...but if she fell over or something...yeah...it's not that I'd sin because of it or that any man necessarily would (although a lot might)...the trouble is that men's minds see a little skin and automatically try to fill in whatever is covered up. That's why a tummy isn't that sexy, but if you show your tummy with a short shirt or hip-huggers, it's not terribly chaste. Even though a man might not sin because of it, it's still rude to do something that will provoke those kinds of mental images for him to battle.

right. I know that there's that danger of if a lady wearing a short skirt fell, it'd be worse than if she had shorts on.

But...isn't part of the immodesty of a short skirt how much legs you're showing? Can't that be a problem for men also? So, besides the fact of that a lady could fall over and that....are shorts any better than a short skirt?

I don't understand this. Because some men would have a hard time with thoughts from seeing so much of a ladies legs. But people think it's fine or whatever if it's shorts..but not if it was a short skirt...showing the same amount of skin as the shorts.

Also....

Why is it okay for a guy to not wear a shirt? For being modest, I mean. If a man is dressing modestly..shouldn't he always wear a shirt around ladies?

I think you pose an interesting question.

I have seen skirts before in the store that had shorts underneath them, and they were what I would consider a reasonable length for shorts, but since it was a skirt over the shorts, I thought it was too short.

I've had a similar problem trying to decide the difference. A couple of summers ago I decided to really only wear skirts instead of shorts. Granted, I still wear shorts if I'm running around and exercising, but the rest of the time I wear a skirt. Mostly because today's styles aren't too helpful with how much shorts tend to show. I don't know where the exact line would be drawn in terms of modesty, but I know that when I wear skirts I don't worry as much. Most of my friends have never even seen me in shorts and when I do wear them on odd occasions, they will comment on how much more "leg" I'm showing. Not something I enjoy hearing, so shorts don't come around very often (especially in public).

I seem to be in the minority because I think that shorts are inappropriate most of the time. Short shorts (to me) are still inappropriate for Mass and such.

But that is just me.

I should correct that. I think skirts are more often more appropriate than shorts. But either one, when short, is inappropriate.

That's really beautiful. :) I try to dress modestly also... Although I tend to wear pants a lot too, which I think is modest..because I don't wear skin tight ones. Anyways. I think that's really great and beautiful what you do though! :)

To be worn under skirts so that in the embarressing event of a fall or slip, you are covered ;)

Any shorts are inappropriate for mass...whether you're a dude or dudette.

guys would probably wear shorts in Bermuda..like Bermuda shorts, with a suit jacket too. Well, that's what they do there....doesn't mean it's appropriate.

I'd still also like to hear what people think about guys not having to wear shirts. Is that unmodest of guys, atleast around ladies?

StMichael

We've got gals (20's) coming to church dressing like strippers. Tight, revealing clothes, tummy out and tramp stamp exposed with platform heels...sometimes you gotta wonder...do they know any better?

I bet that a lot of them don't know any better..some may. I think there's a lot of hurt inside that goes with dressing like that.
