It's pretty good.... It gives very indepth histories of each member of the family and makes use of their letters to each other and to friends extensively, which is cool.

The style can tend to be a bit saccharine in places, and a few parts irritate me by the way they seem to deny all possibility of failings in the Martins (except Leonie) - that can be discouraging for someone who's still struggling with basic faults, ;) especially when the Martins themselves repeatedly emphasize how far they still have to grow in virtue.

But overall, I've enjoyed it quite a bit, so yes, I'd recommend it. :)

Why does it single out Leonie?

Did yo love In this House of Brede, Puella?

Was Leonie the sister who was in another convent, but then left and had troubles finding God's will for her life? I'm not at all sure where I read this - in fact I could have simply dreamt that I read it - so I'm probably completely wrong.

I very much enjoyed Brede. The story tallied quite a bit with what I know of religious life and whilst there were some things about the writing that I wasn't used to (switching speakers mid-paragraph, for instance), it didn't distract much from what was going on.

Love and prayers,

PP

PS I might postpone Spirit of the Liturgy and go through RB1980 again, actually.

I lenjoyed the movie of In This House of Brede...in fact I own it! :tvhappy:

Puella, you are right about Leonie...I have such a love for Leonie too... Many people go to her gravesite & ask for her prayers too...Somewhere I read that she really was able to live out St. Therese's Little Way....

Thanks for the book :book: reccomendation Tindomiel!

I just bought G.K Chesterton's "The Everlasting Man", but I'll stick with:

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
A Biblical Defense of Catholicism by Dave Armstrong
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (not enjoying it one bit though)
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyesky.

 that :book:!!!! I bought an old copy from a library sale years ago & have read it many many times...It is sentimental & sweet & the first book I read that described religious life!

Right now I'm trying to read A Vacation with the Lord....A retreat book based on St. Ignatius' teachings...

Well, I finished it today. It's a nice book, although a bit too over-emotional and flowery for my personal taste.

Love and prayers,

Piccoli Fiori JMJ

Well, I am almost done with Merton's New Seeds of Contemplation and I have to somehow get a copy of Luther's On Christian Liberty and have it read by Monday for my Religious Classics course...
And, I still have yet to finish Imitation of Christ, and then I think I will start Imitation of Mary by Kempis.
