It was more of a hobby for him- he was fascinated by the cultures of Middle Earth, so he started creating and writing down all the legends and history. He tried to submit it for publication, but the editors thought it was too complex. (They wanted another "story about hobbits" to follow up on the success of The Hobbit) So Tolkien set Silmarillion aside and wrote LOTR. After Tolkien died, his son Christopher collected all of his father's unfinished works and published Silmarillion. Sorry..
