I don't need one, I am not adding something to the Mass, you are, therefore you need to show where the bishops announnced a change to the GIRM to include handholding as a gesture appropriate to the Our Father.

When I looked it up, there is no proper possition for the laity during the Our Father in the US GIRM.

That said I don't think that holding hands has ever been a proper possition for prayer.

Yep. So for people and/or priests to decide we will all hold hands and thus insert a new gesture into the Mass is wrong.

It doesn't say anything. So how do you know which way it's supposed to be? It seems to be very open to interpretation.

So.....not being specific=make something up if it you feel good about it?That's very alian to the roman rite, if the rubrics aren't specific,it's better to take a more traditional gesture, not make little priestlings of the congregation. By that logic, why don't we all hold our hands out in the direction of the tabernacle (Or the altar if your parish hides the tabernacle away somewhere)during the Eucharistic prayer?Or have ourselves in the orans during it? The G.I.R.M. Is'nt specific about what we do during that time.

the GIRM is PREscriptive, not PROscriptive. that it means, its a list of what to do, NOT a list of what NOT to do. therefore, if its not in it, it doesn't mean you can do it.

ps. i feel out of the loop not making this a double post

Quite frankly, since only the priest and servers have rubrics for the Mass (I think, someone correct me if I am wrong) the people are free to do what they wish at Mass as long as it is devout and reverent.

I, though, would say that holding hands is neither devout or reverent.

The proper possition for the faithful is spelled out for many parts of the mass, just not the Our Father. For instance, we kneel after the Lamb of God or bow during the creed. There was even a change in the last missal that changed stated that we are to stand during the response "Lord I am not worthy to receive..."
