Well, like I tried to express, I do have respect and appreciation for clowns. My point was that it's just exceptionally difficult to empathize with clowns on account that they persevere in a society with no appreciation of them whatsoever. If you could make a child smile by being silly, surely that's worth everything in the world. But, going out there and trying, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but all the while requiring a courage unlike any other. I don't have much of anything nice to say about Milton, but he did do something to prove that anyone can empathize with anyone by putting you in the shoes of the Prince of Darkness. But those great big plastic shoes? Just too alien for me.

EENS, that is entirely unecessary to post, this is not a thread about liturgical abuses with clowns, it is a thread exploring a more or less theoretical understanding of clowns.

Furthermore, to be a clown is difficult, but the clown is the fool and the fool is to, among other things, entertain. He/She does so by being the center of a joke, and by putting him/herself in situations whereby the audience will laugh and have a good time.

Believe it or not, to be a clown is hard work, and I only do it on occasion and, obviously, never at liturgies. Say what you want about the clown, but they actually work just as hard as any actor, mime, magician, or street performer. Yes, they are underappreciated and people think that by putting on a silly costume, some big shoes, and a lot of make-up you can become a clown, but it is so much more than that, and I have two clown friends (one who is a former Barnum and Bailey clown and one that works at Dollywood) who work very hard each and every day, who have done it for years and would not trade it for the world.

I realize there was really no continuity to what I just said, but it was more of a stream of consciousness meandering of those things concerning clowns....got spiritual direction....gotta go!

Fact: Clowns eat people.

The statement below is debateable.
