hyperdulia again
In 1978, a few weeks after his election and consecration, Pope John Paul II heard a voice cry out from the crowd at an audience, "Do not forget the Church of Silence!" He replied, "It is silent no more! It speaks with my voice."

hyperdulia again
i think he was more integral in the fall of communism than ron reagan even. he sent missionaries he set up hierarchies and gave the sacraments to catholics who had gone without them for half a century (in russia the church was "destroyed" during Stalin's reign, but it turns out catholics (roman, byzantine, georgian) were refusing to recieve sacraments from the orthodox and waiting until it was safe to practice their faith again. The Pope's visit to Poland in 1979 helped energize Polish nationalism and inspired Lech Walesa and Solidarnosc as a political force. Lech Walesa was and still is a devout Catholic, and the Catholic Church in Poland was sympathetic to Solidarnosc; in fact, Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko was killed by the state police. When in 1989 free elections were held for one of the houses of the Sejm (the Polish parliament) and Solidarnosc won a landslide victory, that was the first domino to fall in the Warsaw pact. I think we all know the rest of the story.
