I should be a slap in the face of modern Christendom when the Non-Christians can say they refuse to accept it because its wrong, while so many Christians accept it.

God help us in these dark times.

I like what he is saying. At points, I thought he might have lifted notes from the pope. "Hey! That's what the pope said!"

I have a question about one of his comments.
Whoever shows you greatest kindness and comfort, they are your family.
Only those who show you kindness and comfort are your family? How does this jive with "love your enemy"?
32 For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is) that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
Luke 6:32-34
It seems to me family includes those who don't always show you kindness and comfort. I might be over interpreting what he is saying or looking at things from my Christian perspective. :idontknow:

That is a non-sequitur fallacy. Just becase he says that those who show you kindness are your family does not mean he automatically deny the need to show even your enemy love.

Maybe so. I guess he was trying to say "They are kind and comforting. They are my family." The way he phrased it seems to say families are made of those who are kind and comforting. His quote was drawing a conclusion, not a general comment. I would ask him "And who are those who are not kind and comforting?"

He might be speaking of the ideal family unit, which is one where all are kind and comforting. I give him the benefit of the doubt.

He sounds like Mother Teresa when he talks about the spiritual poverty in the West.

Yes. I pray that the topic of Western spiritual poverty will become a wide discussion. We really need to sit down and examine our lives and the society we live in. I have been reading several books about materialism and the consumer society and it is quite eye-opening. :pigfly:

just because we love our enemies doesn't make them our family. that doesn't even make them our friends. they are our enemies, we just love them anyway ;)

St. John tells us, "Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer". In other words, anyone who hates anyone is a murderer. In other words, anyone is our brother. Or, rather, everyone is our brother. We all come from the same moms. ...Even if there is some family drama. :)
