franciscanheart
JMJ 4/12 - Spy Wednesday hugheyforlife, In Latin, there are two words for "men" - homines and viri. Homines is a generic term meaning "mankind" or, if you will, "humankind." Viri, on the other hand, means "men" as opposed to "women." The rite calls for the washing of the feet of twelve men (viri). Long way to the answer, but sometimes the scenic route is the most informative. wink.gif Yours, Pio Nono
So then it would be out of line with the rite if women were to have their feet washed? We've had a new priest for about... four years... and I thought he was really traditional and in line with traditional teachings. I know now though that he has been washing the feet of at least one woman since he arrived. I didn't realize before this year. Perhaps I never took enough notice? I overheard my parents talking to a woman-friend of ours though and about how she was getting her feet washed today and I was a bit surprised.... Just to be sure... she shouldn't have her feet washed?
Pio Nono
JMJ 4/13 - Holy Thursday hugheyforlife, According to the documents, no. However, I wouldn't make a big fuss about it, either. Perhaps there are reasons for what this priest is doing that we don't know about that legitimize the practice. We always have to provide the benefit of the doubt. Hope this helps.
