For those who believe downloading music

Also remember that "back in the day" it was illegal to even have two VCRs set up to record off of each other unless you had a license or could demonstrate a legitimate need or something (I don't really remember). So even back then it was illegal to copy a VHS tape. The only difference here is that someone else does the copying and passes it on via the internet.

getting from radio or TV = free stuff anyways

getting stuff online = controversial

you're not supposed to pay for radio.

you are supposed to pay for CD's and movies to own them. but some fellas download them off the internet. do the places they download from own the copyrights or have permission from the artists to put the stuff up there?

anyways, those are my bold and provocative questions for all o' ye who download junk off the internet. sometimes I wonder about it myself, but I usually end up going ascetic and cuttin' stuff out cuz I'm scrupulous.

p.s. hows it goin, jon?

I used to download music off the internet, but I stopped, because, well, I think it's wrong. I mean, it's copyrighted music, and all of those songs that you're downloading are illegal copies.

How would you feel if you made your own professional music album, but no one bought it because they could just get it for free off the internet?
Well I don't see how anyone could have their doubts about it. As Catholics we are supposed to follow all just laws. The law never states that it is illegal to record a tv show, if it did then a vhs recorder or dvr would be an illegal device to have in any home in the united states. These items such as a cd or dvd burner would be contraban. But I suppose you could be right, burners were first being sold with the ideal that you can make a backup copy of something you've purchased. I guess its like giving a child a book of matches and then tell him not to play with fire. I personally will continue downloading music until the law says otherwise. I think its ridiculous to prosecute a 12 year old girl for downloading a bunch of N'sync and Backstreet Boy songs. If anything I download as a way of "sticking it to the man" if you will.

It has always been illegal to record shows for archival purposes. There's a copyright notice on all broadcast programming.

The legal use of a VCR or DVR is "time shifting" -- meaning you record something you'd otherwise miss, so you can view it later.

You really ought to look up the law before making stuff up. This has all been hotly and publicly contested. There may be unclear details of copyright law, but this stuff isn't it.

Downloading copyrighted songs because you don't want to pay for them is stealing. Period. You are breaking both human laws and God's commandment. If you're fine with that, then there's something wrong with your conscience.

Well, something is wrong with the record labels conscience by charging 15 dollars an album, and sometime 25 if there is a "bonus" dvd included, when in fact it costs shreds to make that cd. The net profit on album sales is sick. Its greed. So they need to make a middle ground, cut costs of albums. Then they can by all means turn around and clearly define in the law that downloading music is illegal. Until then, I will continue to add to my 11.14 GB/128 hours of music.

Actually, I was part of a class-action lawsuit that said just that a few years ago. I got a check for $15 in the mail from it. I certainly haven't noticed a change in CD prices since then though. :idontknow:

I seem to have started two threads of the same debate, although that wasn't my intent.

HOWEVER, I find it very interesting that in Open Mic so many people think it is alright to download, and on the debate table, so many people think it is wrong.

Interesting.

And so I refuse to stop downloading music. I'm not saying that I don't still buy albums. Because I do, but I ususally try to buy cd's from artists that I believe actually deserve a little money in their pockets. And alot of these artists that arn't mainstream, that I like to listen to, don't have record labels. Thus no way of mass distribution of their albums, so downloading their music is going to:
1)build a fan base
2)increase ticket sales at local shows
3)get them enough exposure to get a label
3a)make enough money through live shows and self promotion to start their own label
4)mass produce an album.
True fans of the artist will pay for their music at this point, to show appreciation and commitment to their music and all their hard work.

The music industry is a different ballgame then it was 10 years ago.
