prose
Was recording songs of the radio in the 80s onto cassettes a sin too? If not, what is the difference?
Era Might
Songs on the radio are not a product you have to pay for. They were free.
prose
So if I record off online radio onto a CD, it wouldn't be a sin?
Era Might
I would say no, because radio stations play songs that the artists release for free to the public. The songs are intended to be a tease for you to buy the rest of the album. It's the same with videos.
Era Might
...of course, if you have doubts, you should ask a Priest.
philothea
Radio stations pay very large fees to be able to broadcast copyrighted songs, partially because people can record them. Of course, the recording from an FM station isn't nearly the quality of the recording you can purchase. Music companies get upset about digital copying and downloads because you can get very good copies easily, and they think this discourages sales. (They are wrong, but that doesn't really affect the morality of the issue.) BTW, most online "radio stations" do not pay these fees, and are -- according to RIAA -- illegally "broadcasting". (Though, technically internet is point-to-point, not broadcast, and I don't know how this has gone down legally. RIAA annoys me.)

OverheadNite
...of course, if you have doubts, you should ask a Priest.
I have no doubt in my mind. No need to ask a Priest. Did we all have to ask a Priest if recording our favorite tv show or a tv movie on a vhs was a sin? Or how about todays modern tivos or dvrs? Which you can in turn connect to your choice of a vhs or dvd recorder and transfer what you've "tivoed" Nope, no sin at all here. Just an outcry from the record companies because its money they can't get their filthy hands on. Personally I do believe its a sin if, just as with any recorded tv show or movie, you turn around and sell that copy. If you are netting a profit off of someone else's work, then yes you should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But if it is for your own personal use, then they have no right to tell you that you can't. Find me the constitutional ammendment that says its illegal? The same uproar occured when the vhs recorder came out. Give them time to regulate breathing, they'll be fine.

Well I don't see how anyone could have their doubts about it. As Catholics we are supposed to follow all just laws. The law never states that it is illegal to record a tv show, if it did then a vhs recorder or dvr would be an illegal device to have in any home in the united states. These items such as a cd or dvd burner would be contraban. But I suppose you could be right, burners were first being sold with the ideal that you can make a backup copy of something you've purchased. I guess its like giving a child a book of matches and then tell him not to play with fire. I personally will continue downloading music until the law says otherwise. I think its ridiculous to prosecute a 12 year old girl for downloading a bunch of N'sync and Backstreet Boy songs. If anything I download as a way of "sticking it to the man" if you will. I guess I'm just very sure, so its hard for me to see any doubt in the matter.
