Dodgey Mass on campus

There are REALLY dodgey Masses on campus on Wednesdays....I want to stop them, or something.....

We sit in a circle.

The Gospel is read by a woman.

There is a group discussion/sharing session instead of a homily.

The priest doesn't wearing vestments (didn't realise he WAS a priest til afterwards.)

He sits while saying his "personal" consecration - using the "basis" of the correct Eucharistic prayer.

Pita bread was used instead of the Host.

The "consecrated Bread" is passed around the circle, each offering to ones neighbour.

Is this full of liturgical abuses or am I being too legalistic?

Well, did he say "This is my body" and "This is my blood"? Other than that, that was not a Catholic Mass.

what he said

Id advise you to not participate in anything remotly like that. Let it be known that you do not approve of such a great sacrilage. Call your Bishop.

If everything happened as you reported and I am not doubting you ....In my opinion.....the Mass is irregular at best and may even be invalid...... :maddest: I think that the bishop should be informed directly.

So the fact I'm shocked, disgusted, saddened, sickened, angry, repulsed, devastated, horrified, and at a loss for words.....is a normal reaction??

I am so disappointed, 1. that this is being allowed to happen, and 2. that no one has yet made a stand!

Not that most of the is normal, but about the gospel part, why is that part so bad? It was women who were first told to tell of the resurrection of Christ.

I would tell your bishop. . .:sadder: That just breaks my heart. Changing the Mass like that, turns it away from Christ and makes it all about the priest.

Oy, liturgical abuses. :pinch:

I definately think the authorities should be appraised of this situation. You're right to feel very uncomfortable, because this is way outside the norms of the Church. I'd contact your bishop ASAP and get this thing straightened out. Greivous liturgical abuses like these are toxic to one's soul.

There may be a problem with validity anyways if pita bread was used...
And according to GIRM, it is to be a deacon or priest who proclaims the Gospel reading

Wow. I've only heard about these things... if I ever where to somehow experience it, I think I would explode. Well, I would get very angry and probably not say anything...

Terrible. Alert the authorities!

That's the worst case of "off-the-cliff" I've heard of in awhile.

A woman may not read the gospel

The "discussion group" instead of a homily is not proper

Pita bread????

Lay people may not play "Pass The Communion" to each other

I am not sure about the vestments thing...

I'm older, so my first reaction was to want to tell the priest that the 60's are dead and please fast forward to NOW. The hippie-dippy luv circle ain't cutting it. BUT....

We all fall and stumble now and again, so prayer and charity must prevail. If you are worried perhaps you can find a church off-campus that is close?? Better a small trip than a soul that is disturbed.

Prayers for a quick resolution for you
Mary-Kathryn
