Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
i really want to go tonight. but i don't know if i can. i do not know if i should make a general confession or not ive come to the conclusion that Rock n' roll is sinful. (Benedict XVI agrees). I i would have to delete my rock n' roll it is VERY HARD to remain in a state of grace at school! i also do not know how much detail to go into in a confession. lets say i slandered a bishop. would i say which bishop? would i say what i said? would i say why? im also confused about what a reconcilliation service is? zwergel88
a reconcilliatin service is just the thing that parishes have before Easter where a whole bunch of priests are there to hear confessions from a whole bunch of people. They usually, have everyone pray the Act of Contrition together to save time and then everyone goes to individual confession.
It depends on the words, and the intent of your listening to it. I would think that listening to it would be a venial sin if it is sinful at all. Balthazor
If rock and roll is sinful...then half of my "our Fathers" must be sinful... because I rock out when I pray.... I even put prayer lyrics to Jimmi Hendrix tunes. In fact sometimes I put on some black crows on my way to work and pray a few decades of the rosary. I am not accusing you of it, nor am I implying that listening to Rock n Roll is a good or bad thing, but you might want to step back and see what it is that is causing the guilt that is leading you to associate externals like rock music and the like to trouble your conscience. Balthazor
Tell as much as you think is applicable. I just tell Enough so they know what I did. That is what I do, I mean if I go into too much detail my confessions sounds a little like soap operas.

Do your best to recall all your sins, confess them as best you can, by making a proper examination of conscience beforehand. If you feel that you should name the bishop specifically or the priest asks you to (which I doubt he would) then do so, otherwise, give as much detail as needed for the confessor to understand what you are talking about, the sin you have committed, and why you are there in the first place. At least that is what I would do, and would hope people would do for me in a little over a month God Bless
magnificat
I believe that you are to go into enough detail so that the priest understands what you're confessing and how many times you've committed that sin. So in the example about the bishop, I don't think it's necessary to mention which bishop (unless the priest asks). However, I don't think it'd be enough just to say "Oh, I said some bad things." Piccoli Fiori JMJ
Probably not, but just the nature of what was said... you could just plainly say, I slandered a bishop, like you said before... If they ask for more, you can provide them with more. It also looks like your example is a mortal sin: http://www.catholic.org/frz/examen/examen_mortal.htm read the list under #
