I examine my conscience and pray to God before I go in so that I remember my sins. I take an examination of Conscience guide in with me b/c the Commandments remind me which sins I have committed

I just recall my mortal sins, and also my venial sins if i remember them. I tend to have the same mortal sins unfortunately, so I can remember them.

Our's doesn't have a lamp but it has a large frosted window so there is planty of light to read if you would want to. I don't keep a paper for my sins, I just try to go often enough so that I only have a few and I can just remember them easily

what would one do if one needed to read but their is no light?:

I was always taught to not write them but to just say them. Working with youth, often seek the advise of priests. I have been told that the reason that you don't write them is because once the sins are forgiven they are forgiven. Unless you burn your note (or as I once did - flush the note written on tp) it could fall into someone else's hands. How to do it? I was taught - start with the biggest sins first. I sometimes bring an examination of conscience or the 10 Commandments but not often. I do, however, spend the better part of an hour before confession preparing for it.

My parish confessional has a light, although it's dim.
