If any where to ask her or any of her confers in Eerie PN, they would admit to seeing it as both a possibility and a necessity.

Does Sr. 'Lost my habbit' know the all male priesthood is a dogma of the faith thanks to JPII? If she still supports it, she may be pushing 'anathema'.

If someone bugs me enough, I may look up the reference unless some hardcharger beats me to it (hint: encyclical)

Maybe you should check. You don't want to leave a mess like that lying around.

Dr. Jack Calareso, President
Ohio Dominican University
xxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxx

April 4, 2006

Dr. Calareso:

I am surprised at the University’s choice and allowance of Joan Chittister to speak at Commencement this year. You can be assured that I will not be attendance, and that I am highly thankful I do not graduate for another year. I can only pray that by next year the University—as a Catholic University—will have more sense than to invite and bestow honor upon a woman who has openly professed her defiance of Catholicism—the very principles this University claims to celebrate as truth. As I walk to class everyday in Erskine Hall, the University motto stares on the campus: “to contemplate the truth and to share with others the fruits of this contemplation.” If Joan Chittister and her criticisms against the foundational principles of ODU are the best “fruits” the University has to offer graduates, then Ohio Dominican is a sorry University in great need of basic logic: it makes no sense to have a speaker in open defiance of the truth (Catholicism) come and speak to the graduates of a University whose motto claims love of truth.

Hopefully next year, I will be able to attend my own Commencement ceremonies and hear a speaker worthy of my time and support as a Catholic student at ODU.

Regretfully,

Jillian xxxxxx, class of 2007
Other students have been e-mailing him, so I did as well:
Dr. Calareso,

I dropped off a letter by your office yesterday, I hope you received it and found the time to read it as I had some concerns about the Commencement speaker for this year: Sr. Joan Chittister. I have recently overheard that you've remarked Sr. Chittister is in good standing with the Catholic Church. This is simply untrue as I hope to inform you by this e-mail.

Joan Chittister is in support of women's ordination. Read almost any of her articles tainted with disdain for the "patriarchy" of the the Church. She participated as a supporter and speaker of the Women's Ordination Worldwide (WOW) gathering in Dublin, Ireland in 2001-- in which her participation earned her a letter from the Holy See's Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life to her prioress in Erie. The webiste for the Sisters then boasted of Sr. Chittister disobedience in attending and addressing the WOW participants anyway. This is not the mark of Catholicism. This stance has already been clearly defined by the Catholic Church in Pope John Paul II's document entitled "Ordinatio Sacerdotalis" (link). Women cannot and will never be priests.  Also, in a 1994 Call to Action keynote speech, she remarked, "faced with a choice between maleness and sacraments, the Church has chosen for maleness. Faced with a choice between sexuality and sacraments, the Church has chosen for celibacy. The new golden calf in the ecclesiastical desert is, therefore, an unmarried man . . . We need idol smashers aplenty if this Church is ever to reach the promised land". This is most certainly not the remark of a faithful Catholic woman, nor is a group like "Call to Action" remotely faithful or in good standing with the Catholic Church. How then can a woman be a member of a dissident group and still be in good standing with the Church? This is a contradiction. (you can find Chittister's name and addresses scattered throughout the "Call to Action" website: http://www.cta-usa.org/history.html ).

Need I go on?

I hope, Dr. Calareso, and I sincerely pray that you will see the absurdity of inviting and bestowing honor, as a Catholic University, upon Sr. Joan Chittister.

Thank you for your time,
Jillian xxxxxxx

"Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know Himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves." Pope John Paul II, Fides et Ratio (Joannes Paulus P.P. II, ora pro nobis!)
I also wrote the Bishop for the Diocese asking him not to come to Commencement, and to voice his opposition to Chittister.

Say some serious prayers. Any other suggestions?

Change schools? Get the senior class to get involved to say no.
