[quote name='J.R.D' date='Mar 31 2006, 07:35 PM']OUR COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON IMMIGRANTS! They will always be IMMIGRANTS because THEY WERE NOT HERE FIRST! The Indians were!

that was then this is now. America did not have social programs when my family immigrated here. where as immirgants now a days rely heavily on welfare and other social programs. they do not know english and refuse to assimilate.

[quote name='avemaria40' date='Mar 31 2006, 06:36 PM']Can we all calm down before someone posts something they would never say in public?  I understand immigration is a very sensitive topic for many people and we all hold different opinions on it, but lets not put people down.  It's either that or someone will have to close this thread

some are so busy working 3 below minimum wage jobs and taking care of kids that they don't have time to try and learn English

Immigrants should learn English but it's hard to assimilate when no one is helping you and you weren't able to come here legally for whatever reason.

its nothing more than disgusting Socialism. You think my family had anything when they came to America? they had nothing. absolutely nothing. No government checks coming in the mail , and no food stamps. they got jobs and they survived. and btw they were discriminated against just as much as mexicans are today.

Not all of them are illegal, my immigrant friends came legally.

And, btw, many people thought the same way of 19th Century immigrants that many people feel about today's Hispanic/Latino immigrants

I agree. My grandfather worked 3 jobs, and in the 48 years of working those jobs, he only recived a .25 cent increase. He had to support a wife, his mom, his 4 children and his 3 nephews and nicies. My mom started working when she was 11. My other aunts and Uncles also worked when they were between 12-14 years of age. My grandfather worked from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and when he got home he ate, showered and slept. Sundays was his only day off and he spent it with his family.
