Dreams

I was wondering what everyone's take on dreaming is...

Why do we dream? Do dreams have meaning or are our minds just keeping themselves occupied while we rest?

I have had some pretty powerful and seemingly meaningful dreams. I don't usually like to dwell on them though because it tends to lead me into "new age-ish" patterns of thought. So I usually just dismiss it as the brain keeping busy while I snooze.

What do you think?

A man comes to me in my dreams. I don't know who he is. But he's burned, he wears a weird hat, a red and green sweater, real dirty, and he uses some sort of knives he's got made into a sort of...glove. Like giant finger-nails.

Well, it depends on who you talk to.

I think, for the most part, that dreams are just our brains cleaning themselves out of information that has accumulated. 90% of the time, people can pick out where something in a dream came from out of events that are happening or have happened in their normal lives. Even intense dreams can often be traced back to mundane things.

(that is the psych degree in me talking)

Now, I also think dreams can be a venue for God to speak to us. He does it throughout the Bible to several people, so I don't think it is too far-fetched.

(That is the spiritual me talking)

The point is that it is difficult to tell the difference. If you think God is speaking to you, pray and ask about it. Otherwise, chalk it up to our brains working funny.

Sometimes if I'm stressed about something or trying to remember all the things I need to get done, I'll dream about it. Last night, I dreamt that I was at my work, visiting everyone one last time before I leave. The first call I got this morning was from a friend at my former work, asking if I was coming over! :idontknow: So, it could be a melange of things. . .if it seems to have some serious significance, I'd pray about it, and ask our Lord to show you what it means, and if He's trying to speak to you.

I once dreamed that all fhe Phatmassers were on a talk show. We just sat around in person and talked.

I need a new hobby....

Hopefully the next Freddy vs Jason movie, or possibly Freddy vs Jason vs Michael Myers movie; is better.

I often have dreams that I think are representational of emotions I'm working through. But others just make no sense.

Like recently I dreamed that I had raccoons living in a small tent in my living room. When I looked inside the tent, they had cute little raccoon sleeping bags AND they'd strung up a clothesline inside where they had hung up a bunch of my socks. Proof that the Sock Monster does exist.

most times I find them completely entertaining, especially when I realize I'm dreaming midway through the dream. then it's like "oh man, this isn't real so I could eat like six birthday cakes and not get sick while watching the mets win the world series on a sandy beach in the carribean."

or something like that!

We dream so we don't go brain dead.

God has talked to some prophets in dreams. If we think God or a Saint is talking to us in a dream, we must have a firm understanding of the faith and know how to test the spirits... as it is written in Scripture. Any spirit not of God will not be able to attest that Christ has come in the Flesh.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 This is how you can know the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh be longs to God,
3 and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that, as you heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world.

Dreams are a great way to help yourself solve problems... if you are able to take control of them, for example you can go to Einstein for a physics problem... I'm not saying this is the real Einstein, but your mind will create a character from the physics that you have studied, your mind will be able to recall things you read that you cannot... Our memories are stored chemically... we cannot always access a memory when we want to... in a dream, time can take as long as it needs to.
