Theoketos
Theoketos, I'm curious. After Fr. Pacwa and Janet Smith left I had heard that there were some problems at UD. I take it you disagree. I live in Texas and have 5 under college aged children and would like to know how UD is doing. Can you give me a run down on the current state of affairs at UD vis a vie orthodoxy and environment? By environment I mean, is it a relatively good environment for college aged adults to grow in their faith or is it more like a typical secular public college? Thanks.
UD is a great undergraduate school. It is very academic and the community is very good. (Honestly not as good as Benedictine, though I favor Benedictine as it is my alma mater) Recently the last slightly unorthodox (never said anything in the class room that was unorthodox, but personally was struggling espcially as democrat) left the school because he felt like loyality to the magisterium was more important to the school and the theology department then Academic Freedom. He also called students thought police (He stated this in the University's Newspaper) UD is however stuggling financially, mostly because of the effects of contraception as the enrollment is down 1/3 more then it should since 1978. The last president was a doofus sometimes and tried to get rid of the Classical Liberal Arts Identity. He failed fortunately, but not without out establishing a MBA program that is full corperate Pirtates, but that program is a nice cash cow and is not really apart of UD other then takes up all the class room space on weekends and evenings (when Theology Grad classes are given, this caused my over loaded (20 people) class for Christian Anthropology to bit a bit nomadic. This however ment that we often had class out side, which I loved. There has been talk recently of establishing a new core with slightly less core classes and more majors, but we grad students through such a hissey fit that the President backed off. (I thought what he was doing was valid enough. I mean I really do not want the doors of the university to close), The scandal in my opinon was not much a scandal. There is unfortunately one hetordox priest in the Campus Ministry program. He uses gender neutral terms in the Liturgy. However, he is pretty much harmless and very muched marginalized by his own agenda. Honestly, he has come along way in just two years. And further he might be an example of charity reconverting a heterdox priest. Now across the street is the foundation for renewal of orthodoxy for the Dallas Diocese. The Cistercian order is my hero. Those monks are awesome. I go to thier Liturgy as often as I can. They Chant and do not use EMoHC. The abbot teaches classes and is on the Pontifical Biblical Commission. Fr. Roch Kertesky is the leadin authority on Christology. He teaches at U.D. as well. Fr. David Balas is a leading Patristic Scholar (the Authority on Gregory of Nyssa) He teaches as well. Dr. Mark Lowery is the Department Chair. He is friends with Janet Smith and the best moral theologian I have ever met or read. Janet Smith left for Ave Maria. She did not stay long because she did not like the Tom Monahan dictatorship of Ave Maria. She is welcome back at U.D. any time, and would come back, but she works at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. They afford he the opportuinity to do more lectures, so she stays there. Notre Dame is not a good Catholic School. As long as they advocate and Gay and Lesbian film festival and a shaddy athletic department it will not be. For Undergraduates though I would still recomend most of them to Benedictine. BTW I captilize things at Random. It is part of some learning disablity I am sure. Luckly the internet is not an academic news paper.

From what I know of St. Joseph's, it's a "drinking school with a Catholic problem." The people that I know there definitely aren't what I would consider orthodox. I'm sure there are people there who are fine, but the overall atmosphere isn't orthodox like it should be. On Pilgrimage
lol. I walked past a group of kids waiting for a tour and said "get out while you still can. Run away!" They looked at my like I was an alien. Poor, poor children.
Did something bad happen with Franciscan U? The reason I'm not sure about going there is safety -- there's a lot of crime in that area and students have been killed in that area. Otherwise, I thought it was a fairly orthodox school and everything.

missionseeker
I'm going to Southern Catholic College but it's in Goergia (north Georgia) As far as I can tell, it's Orthodox. (they're giving me money to start a chant choir) They have the mandatum (or however you phrase that sentence) It' extremely small. And Brand new which means they aren't accreditted yet, though. However, they have LOTS of scholarship money.

What happened to them was horrific and tragic, but it was also a fluke. Steubenville does have a lot of unsafe areas, but don't make it seem like murders are common place. Petrus
Does anyone have any suggestions for Catholic universities that also have a decent Engineering program? Two years ago when I was applying for college, that was my dilemma. My sister is a senior in high school right now and is also going into engineering. I applied (and was accepted to) Santa Clara, CUA, Villanova, and Gonzaga. I only applied to Santa Clara because my parents had gone there (in the 80's), but the other three schools seemed to be pretty much on the same level in Catholicity. I ended up going to GU because of a much better scholarship, the location, and a generally Catholic feel. Well, now that I have been here almost two years, I am happy, but not pleased with the Catholic character of the university. Our president, Fr. Spitzer, is amazing and has done a lot of good, but there are so many evil professors. I have heard rumors, however, that there is a professor in the Religious Studies dept. that teaches what the Church teaches. The philosophy dept. is better. There is quite a bit of heretical activity, but the Catholic students have a fellowship that we call the John Paul II fellowship, where we have small groups and speakers, so that is nice. The diocesan seminary across the street is also very solid, I hang out there often. I actually know a couple really cool orthodox Jesuits too. I would have loved to go to a real Catholic university and study Theology or Philosophy (I am a phil. minor) but I just felt like it would be more responsible to get a degree (Electrical Engineering) so that I could easily support a family if that is what God is calling me to do. So the question I am interested in hearing is what is the best Catholic University with an Engineering dept.?
