Cross vs. stake

So, this silly JW that I know is claiming that Jesus was hung on a stake, not a cross. He says that in the greek translation, it does not use the word for cross, but rather "tree" or "stake."

I was just wondering if anyone knew what word is used in greek for the passage where Jesus tells us to pick up our cross and follow him?

Oh boy, do the JW capture Jesus' words so elegantly!

From the New World Translation:

"Then Jesus said to his disciples: “If anyone wants to come after me, let him disown himself and pick up his torture stake and continually follow me. "

Besides, can one really be nailed to a stake as described in the Gospel?
