Theologian in Training
So, we just had Corned Beef and Cabbage and a guy here (who is Irish) did a little concert. It was a nice little time. "Backstage" he sang a few other non-Irish songs and I read a poem by Yeats with him singing last refrain in each stanza. The poem will be at the end of this post. Happy St. Paddy's Day!!! The Pilgrim ------W.B. Yeats------ I fasted for some forty days on bread and buttermilk, For passing round the bottle with girls in rags or silk, In country shawl or Paris cloak, had put my wits astray, And what's the good of women, for all that they can say Is fol de rol de rolly O. Round Lough Derg's holy island I went upon the stones, I prayed at all the Stations upon my matrow-bones, And there I found an old man, and though, I prayed all day And that old man beside me, nothing would he say But fol de rol de rolly O. All know that all the dead in the world about that place are stuck, And that should mother seek her son she'd have but little luck Because the fires of purgatory have ate their shapes away; I swear to God I questioned them, and all they had to say Was fol de rol de rolly O. A great black ragged bird appeared when I was in the boat; Some twenty feet from tip to tip had it stretched rightly out, With flopping and with flapping it made a great display, But I never stopped to question, what could the boatman say But fol de rol de rolly O. Now I am in the public-house and lean upon the wall, So come in rags or come in silk, in cloak or country shawl, And come with learned lovers or with what men you may, For I can put the whole lot down, and all I have to say Is fol de rol de rolly O. Edited March 17, 2006 by Theologian in Training

Church Punk
Oh Let us sing this fine St. Paddy's day. Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet; As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play Chorus: That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died As Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner pouring out her grief Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole They put the bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold Chorus About two o'clock in the morning after empty'ing the jug Doyle rolls up the ice box lid to see poor Paddy's mug We stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time And at a quarter after two we argued it was nine Chorus They stopped the hearse on George Street outside Sundance Saloon They all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon They went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime Found out when they got there, they'd left the corpse behind! Chorus Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't been sober yet; As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play Chorus
Church Punk
That was fun, I think more Great Big Sea is needed! I drank sixteen doubles for the price of one Tryin' to find the courage to talk to one I asked her for a dance, not a second glance My night had just begun Well, I drink to the Father and the Holy Ghost I'm kneeling at the alter of my nightly post So I'll raise a glass, not the first or last Come join me in this toast CHORUS: Because the old black rum's got a hold on me Like a dog wrapped 'round my leg And the old black rum's got a hold on me Will I live for another day? Hey! Will I live for another day? The queen of George Street just went walkin' by Walkin' on by with some guy who don't care That she stood in line since half past nine And spent three hours on her hair Well, her friend is lookin' at me with an evil grin I think a bloody racket might soon begin I must have said something to the George Street queen Now the boys are joining in. CHORUS So I drank all of my money and I slept out in the rain Every day is different, but the nights they're all the same You never see the sun on the old black rum But I know I'm gonna do it again! CHORUS (x2) I drank sixteen doubles for the price of one
Sojourner
My co-worker, who is wearing a "Made in Ireland" T-shirt, just said my yellow-, orange-, and red-striped socks are "not St. Patrick's Day appropriate." I am unfazed.
Era Might
O glorious Saint of Erin whose wondrous work and word Implanted deep in Irish hearts the faith of Christ the Lord, O'er all the earth thy children thy sweet protection claim, And loyally they keep the love of dear Saint Patrick's name. For centuries thy people have bowed beneath the rod Of cruel wrong, but never yet have they forsaken God; For Ireland's faith has never failed and in her darkest night, Her children brave have kept that Faith and struggled for the right. The seed which thou hast planted now blooms in ev'ry clime; Thy tears and pray'rs, Saint Patrick dear, have made its strength sublime: While other nations bartered their God for pow'r and gold, The Faith of Erin still remains as loyal as of old! Seven77
I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through a belief in the Threeness, Through confession of the Oneness Of the Creator of creation. I arise today Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism, Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial, Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension, Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom. I arise today Through the strength of the love of cherubim, In obedience of angels, In service of archangels, In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward, In the prayers of patriarchs, In preachings of the apostles, In faiths of confessors, In innocence of virgins, In deeds of righteous men. I arise today Through the strength of heaven; Light of the sun, Splendor of fire, Speed of lightning, Swiftness of the wind, Depth of the sea, Stability of the earth, Firmness of the rock. I arise today Through God's strength to pilot me; God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me, God's hosts to save me From snares of the devil, From temptations of vices, From every one who desires me ill, Afar and anear, Alone or in a mulitude. I summon today all these powers between me and evil, Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul, Against incantations of false prophets, Against black laws of pagandom, Against false laws of heretics, Against craft of idolatry, Against spells of women and smiths and wizards, Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul. Christ shield me today Against poison, against burning, Against drowning, against wounding, So that reward may come to me in abundance. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me. I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through a belief in the Threeness, Through a confession of the Oneness Of the Creator of creation St. Patrick (ca. 377)
