dimco926
I am new to this area of church, but I recently volunteered to be a Eucharistic Minister. I did this for two reasons. One is because I felt the need deep within me and second was to be a mentor for my kids in the youth group I oversee. Now, as I said, I am new to this and never had the normal childhood Catholic teachings, but I was raised Roman Catholic, and received my sacrements (confirmation/comunion at age 21-RCIA). So onto my question. I attended a training session, but I was wondering if there are any special prayers or prep I should know/do prior to ministering the Host. Basically what is involved in being a Eucharistic Minister? Can I give the Host to home/hospital bound Catholics and if so, what is the procedure for that. I do have a pyx (sp?). They were nice in the training, but when people are so used to doing something they feel everyong should know how to do it--does that make sense? Also, can you recomend any good reading material? Thanks to all that answer and sorry this post may sound goofy--my head is full of questions!
Pio Nono
JMJ 3/17 - St. Patrick dimco926, Though I know of no specific prayers that an extraordinary minister of communion should say, I would think it wise to develop within your heart a deep love for Christ our Eucharistic Lord. To that end, I would recommend to you the writings of St. Peter Julian Eymard, who is often called the "Apostle of the Eucharist." You can probably find them online, though I'm not sure where. Also, with regards to your specific questions, I know how it can be - everyone who already does something thinks that everyone else knows implicitly how to do it. If you have questions, just ask them. No one should mind. And yes, you are able to take communion to those in hospitals, as well as the homebound, but I'd think you need to go through your parish for that. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
