HisChild
There is no requirement within Canon Law to wear head coverings. The 1917 code did require it but that requirement has since been abrogated. Someone help me to understand why you would wear a veil to a TLM and not to a NO. I'm a guy so I don't get it. I'm guessing that if you felt that you should wear one that it would be because scripture says you should wear one (see below) and/or perhaps because you feel that it is a fitting sign of reverance towards God. Either being the case, why wear one to TLM and not NO? Just curious.
I wear it in church, period. Doesn't matter what Mass I'm at, because regardless, I am at A Mass. I wear it for Jesus, not for how cool I do or do not look, or for how I may appear to others. Wearing a simple black mantilla, is not flashy, it's not 'holier than thou', it's to show Jesus that while in the presence of His Glory, I cover my own. My personal two cents is that if you feel called to do so, it's probably not coming from you. It's probably coming from Him, who is asking that of you. Not everyone can do it (or not everyone will), but if you can give your 'yes', how happy He'll be to see you giving that extra reverence. LOL Something I found amusing. . .I once asked a girl, who was about 13, why she covered her head. She started in on various quotes in the Bible which states that we are to cover our head while in His presence and while praying. Then she said, 'well, and also I wear my veil for those nuns who don't.' I thought that interesting coming from a 13 yr old. Here's a thought to ponder. If Scripture tells us to cover our heads while in prayer, and Scripture also tells us to pray without ceasing. . .does that mean, by obeying Scripture, we should always cover our heads? Hmmmm. That thought was just. . .persistent, for a long while.

Aloysius
Scripture commands it and it was done with or without a requirement from canon law in all 20+ rites for 20 centuries without exception. There is absolutely no excuse for not retaining such a pious practice. That said, I understand girls not feeling comfortable doing it since it is no longer normally done. But I do not understand the position that girls shouldn't do it, because there is absolutely no way to brand something that has been done universally in all places and times in the Catholic Church as something superfluous that can be dropped at the whim of a culture's style and fashion. That position makes no sense whatsoever... if girls aren't going to wear head coverings we might as well stop having the priest wear vestements... though even that would actually make more sense there because priests didn't always wear vestments... but women always wore veils. It is an absolute travesty that this practice has fallen into such wide disuse.

kateri05
but in a place where pious practices in general do not abound, the likelihood of being seen as holier than thou is very real. people here are already put off by orthodoxy itself, i'm don't want to seem like i'm shoving it down their throat. i teach at a "catholic" high school and if i started wearing a headcovering to school masses (im the campus minister, so i'm running around all Mass, very visible), people would assume i was being really strict, oldfashioned and blah blah. its not that i'm worried what people would say "about" me, but that it might hurt my ability to be effectively heard by others on issues of real important (ie. one hour between lunch and mass on the faculty retreat, or at least some kind of semblance of a n hour and not 15 minutes ). and issues of real import come up ALL the time, i am in LA afterall! :

Tink
I don't know about head coverings... there's a girl in my youth group who wears one, but all she does is fidget with it and it makes her seem very pretentious.
