This might be a contraversial thread to be starting right before I run off to bed, but I trust it's come up before, and that everyone will keep their claws in. (We're all reasonable people here, right? ;))

{That said, if I've unknowingly stepped on a Phatmass landmine, I apologize!) :idontknow: :tomato:

Women, do you cover your heads in Church? If so, and you feel comfortable sharing, why do you feel called or commanded to do so? Same question applies if you do not cover your head in Church, but would like to begin this practice. Also, if the latter is the case, what stops you?

For me, I feel like it's something I would do if I didn't think it would stand out and draw a lot of attention away from prayer and the Mass. I attend a more liberal-leaning parish, and can just barely get away with kneeling for Communion. If I walked into Mass with my head covered, especially after leaving it uncovered for so long, guaranteed I would cause drama. (and that's rather sad.)

I think that, for me, wanting to cover my head grows first out of my sense of wonder and awe for the Blessed Sacrament, and hence a feeling that I should veil my head in the presence of the Lord. (More on that whn I'm not so sleepy) Then there is the veil as an acknowledgement of the headship of the Lord in my life, and a reminder that I need to cast off worldly vanities if I am to seek the Lord. This is very like the symbolism held by the habit for me, and it's no surprise that I am drawn to habited orders in my discernment process.

Brother Adam

Reminds me of my baptist days when there was a strong group of ladies that wore head coverings and seriously doubted the salvation of any woman who didn't. I even gave them their own forum on my message board once to try to gather them all up into one group to show them the illogic of their argument. Needless to say, I'm a pagan in their eyes lol.

I would if I had one and didn't go to a life teen mass. It's enough that I come dressed up. (Although, some of the guys wear nice clothes)

I'd like to know what Canon law says about this now.
I'm confused because I know it was required under the old law. Did the new law specifically unrequire it?
I wear a veil when I attend a Tridentine indult, but when I go to the NO I don't.
Point me at some documents! I'm confused! :idontknow:

I would like to see those articles myself.

A few years ago, I'm not sure how or why, but in prayer, I felt all of a sudden very strongly that I should cover my head in Church, whether I be in Confession, at Holy Mass, or adoring our Lord in the chapel. I wasn't sure what to do about it. Granted there were several women in our parish that wore mantillas, chapel veils, etc. But for me? So I went to my spiritual director, our then associate pastor who has since been sent to Rome for some studying. Anyway, he said that it used to be an obvious requirement for women to cover their heads for Mass, but after Vat. II, many women stopped covering their heads because, since it wasn't mentioned in the V II documents, that must mean that it was no longer required. However, there is nothing stating that it isn't required any longer. Granted there has been nothing new written stating that we should or should not. . .but it was never changed. It just ceased its happening and it was never mentioned by the pastors. He actually wrote a rather long paper in seminary about this. He isn't a 'rad-trad', he only says NO masses, etc. (lest one think that's the reason for that defense.) Regardless, he stated that if I felt called to do so, it is now considered a private devotion, that I shouldn't draw attention to myself with fancy colors, sequins, etc. and that I should not bring attention to myself as far as speaking with others in church about covering my head unless I was specifically asked. So, since then, that's what I have done. I wear a longer mantilla (around shoulder length) and have for over a year. In a little over a month, I will be wearing a veil. :)

If you read anything as 'official Church documents', please let me know!

God bless you.

seeking, i completely agree with you... i've often thought about starting but thought i would just cause scandal by the "sticking out ness" involved, esp considering i'm in the LA archdiocese.

PCPA, why would you be wearing a veil? is that vocation reference or am i missing something? lol, sorry for the stupidity, just curious :)

I wear a chapel veil to adoration almost all the time. I've only been to Latin Mass once, but I did wear a veil there. Most Sundays, when I go to the novus ordo Mass with my grandma, I wear womens' hats.

I wore mine to Mass all the time in Ukraine, but now I am so nervous to! I always think it looks a little funny when worn with pants, but I think the biggest thing is my mom. She really is a huge part of why I am 'afraid' to do so, even when she is not around. SHe instilled in my head that everyone will look at me and think I am being 'holier than thou.' That makes me sad.

There is no requirement within Canon Law to wear head coverings. The 1917 code did require it but that requirement has since been abrogated.

Someone help me to understand why you would wear a veil to a TLM and not to a NO. I'm a guy so I don't get it. I'm guessing that if you felt that you should wear one that it would be because scripture says you should wear one (see below) and/or perhaps because you feel that it is a fitting sign of reverance towards God. Either being the case, why wear one to TLM and not NO? Just curious.

[quote]1 Corinthians, Chapter 11.

1 Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me: and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraceth his head. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered, disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven.

6 For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. 7 The man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man. 9 For the man was not created for the woman, but the woman for the man. 10 Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels.
