Church denies Communion to autistic boy

Ok, enough Socrates bashing folks, please. It was a momentary lapse.

I have two handicapped nieces and even I had to chuckle at that since I knew it was not meant in a durogitory way. The one thing my nieces taught me was to at least have a sense of humor, especially when I look in the mirror.

Why couldn't they put one drop of Precious Blood in his mouth?
How is the kid eating anything?

Well, the article says. . .
Autistic children frequently have difficulty eating certain kinds of food, among other disabilities. Moran says Matthew is extremely sensitive to certain colors and textures, and the boy eats and drinks only 'specific' things. (quotes: mine)

I don't know what those specific things are. I know my friend's son can't eat anything with milk or gluten. But that's particular to him. I've just sat and pondered (I don't know why) that he 'wants' to receive communion, but he spits it back out? I don't know. What do you think?

When it says that he's sensitive to colors and textures, do you think that's mainly psychological or neurological vs. allergy? I'm just thinking, that perhaps the family can work with their speech therapists (who in the hospital where I worked, also did swallow evaluations) to see if he can somehow be taught that, in this circumstance, this particular color and/or texture is ok? I know that the learning process is longer for autistic children, but they are able to learn. As my friend with the autistic child said to me at work, 'It's the issue of finding out which particular therapy can 'unlock' the teaching/learning potential for the child'.

I was reading up on autism, and it's unbelievable how many drugs, herbs, therapies, etc. have been used that have helped at least a few people! This one site? http://www.autism-resources.com/autismfaq-trea.html Lists over 50 possibilities for therapies. It's still, though, even with so many therapists, (or at least seems to be) a last-frontier disease.

The thing is, in the end, it looks like the family is pretty educated and has been doing a lot of research and therapy for their child. Hopefully they will find something, either on their own, or in cooperation with the diocese's Office on Disabilities and Pastoral Care.

Prayers for this all around difficult situation!

If you were to touch the host to his tounge and then remove it, I thought it was permissable to dissolve the host in water then pour it in the drain that leads to the ground.

God bless-

If that is permissible. . . then, perhaps the dad has a point with saying that he touches the Host to his son's tongue and then consumes it himself?

Socrates, I knew you were joking. That's what I said knock it off for.

Quietfire, maybe having nieces isn't the same as having sons or daughters - particularly at certain times when it's very hard for the prarents to accept and re-accept and re-accept the afflictions of their child. I do realize you must have an intimate knowledge of this via your nieces. Maybe my husband could chuckle, too. Not me.

To the person who asked: he wants to receive but he spits it out?

If someone's never known of autism spectrum firsthand, one place to maybe start might be reminders of original sin in that we decide we're going on a diet or whatever, and miserably fail...we "want" too lose weight or whatever, but "spit it out" in that way.

That's an analogy, sort of, really has nothing to do with the biological/physiological spectrum disorder of autism.

Transfer the below to sensory activities like eating/drinking...
.....................................................................

Sensory impairments
Many autistic individuals seem to have an impairment in one or more of their senses. This impairment can involve the auditory, visual, tactile, taste, vestibular, olfactory (smell), and proprioceptive senses. These senses may be hypersensitive, hyposensitive, or may result in the person experiencing interference such as in the case of tinnitus, (a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears). As a result, it may be difficult for individuals with autism to process incoming sensory information properly.

comment via Donna ~ (PROPERLY explains I think the "wanting" but "spitting it out").

I "think" that's correct.

I "think" because our expierience is with a different limb of the family tree of autisim, roughly categorized as pdd - pervasive developmental disorder and not as debilitating.

But either way it's scary because in things like scizophrenia the skewed-sense thing can be present, adding to the reality that ppl are not sure of reality. They cannot get there. And this is true of even supposedly mild things like anxiety disorder.

It's really good the awareness coming up with all this stuff. I don't know one family who isn't afflicted with these modern things: autoimmune disease, addiction, biological brain disorders whether that be autism all the way to scizophrenia.

Now it's gone way off topic!

But anyway, I have hope there will be a solution for this child.

Lord Jesus, if it be Your will, please shower down Your graces to this family, to this little boy who wants to receive You in Holy Communion. Amen.

Perhaps a very tiny drop of The Precious Blood from an approved source [something akin to an eye dropper] would be the solution. It would instantly be absorbed once on the tongue and the child would have received The Body and Blood of Our Lord

If the host is able to stay on the child's tongue for several seconds as previously posted, then this should work.

I'm a mom of a special needs child. Parents like us don't give up.

Thy Geekdom Come

I wonder...will the child receive more grace for his obedience than if he had received disobediently? Will he receive more grace for obedience than if he received at all?

Obedience is powerful...perhaps not more grace...but it could be a more graceful response.
