Are we suppose to fast today? I know its not an obligatory day. Are we suppose to fast every Friday until Easter?

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinance. The fridays of Lent are days of abstinance only, you do not need to fast.

Blast. There is half a box of candy sitting on my desk I want to finish. Oh well. Wait, can I make that a small meal?

i don't think that is the point.

We are encouraged to eat enough to keep up strength (i.e. so our body doesn't start shutting down. For a person in the US, this is probably no food at all)

Or else you can use the official only 1 big meal and possiblity of two smaller ones.

I was jesting.

Though I've heard so many different things on this now, that I don't believe any of it.

Lenten and Easter Triduum Regulations

Ash Wednesday
Pastors are reminded that Ash Wednesday is celebrated on March 1, 2006. Ashes are to be distributed on that day either during the celebration of the Liturgy or at a Liturgy of the Word. One cannot anticipate Ash Wednesday by the distribution of ashes on Tuesday evening nor can one distribute ashes during the Sunday Masses on the First Sunday of Lent.

Lenten Regulations
As the season of Lent draws near, it is helpful to recall the discipline of the Church with regards to fast, abstinence and other forms of penance.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.
The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.
Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.
Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.
All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.
As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

I decided to use these 40 days to try to eat like I live in poverty. Also, I gave up meat for Lent.

I'm so miserable and it's only day one.

I heard that a whole bunch of priests across the country are taking on a full-fledge fast today together (I assume for support and the likes)... no food, no water. Absolutly nothing, not even gum. All day.
