Dave
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new; this child that you delivered will soon deliver you. The song is not something Catholics should sing because those lines I've quoted are at odds with Church teaching on Mary's Immaculate Conception. Mary was always sinless -- she never was "made new" because she was new right from the start! And she was delivered from the moment of her conception! But that song talks like it hadn't happened yet. cmotherofpirl
Jesus came to make everything new for everybody. Jesus's death on the Cross applies to everybody including Mary.
Dave
Jesus came to make everything new for everybody. Jesus's death on the Cross applies to everybody including Mary. Yes, but the song implies that Mary was just a sinner like the rest of us, which is false. Yes, it was by the merits (albeit anticipated) of Jesus' death that she was immaculately conceived, but that's just the point -- she was delivered from the moment of her conception, not at a later time! Unlike everyone else, she didn't have to wait.
Ash Wednesday
I think it's Mary's full humanity that makes her so approachable, and especially for women, her femininity. Faithful, I know exactly where you're coming from! I just love Mary. Edited December 17, 2003 by Ash Wednesday
MrsFrozen
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water. Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters. Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new; this child that you delivered will soon deliver you. Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man. Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm the storm with His hand. Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God! Cmother, this was such a beautiful poem!! Did you write it? Hi, Dave.. My priest was talking about this in his homily a couple of weeks ago. Mary was saved by Jesus, and was made new by Jesus, because if Jesus had never been born, there would have been no reason for her to be born without original sin. So yes, she was saved and made new by Jesus. God bless! :)
Ash Wednesday
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new; this child that you delivered will soon deliver you. In a way though, could one possibly apply it to the assumption? Or am I out in left field? Probably. :D

Maybe it implies that to you but not to me. I think its an excellent song and we sing it every Lent.

hopeful1
hmm, my guidance counselor used to sing this during communion at some of the masses. I've never looked at the lyrics until now, and certainly never thought the song to be ...for lack of a better word, heretical. If anything i thought it was a beautiful devotion to the blessed mother

Muschi
Mary, Did you know that your child would make you new? Mary, did you know that your one day He would deliver you? Not exact because my memory stinks and I do not know how to post other's quotes in my own to make my point. This song was (beautiful as it is...) composed by a Protestant. (I'm willing to bet) The above lyrics seem to imply that Mary had yet to be delivered from sin and thus negates her Imaculate Conception. Does anyone else see this? That's why I think this song was banned. - God bless! - Muschi
