cmotherofpirl
No one is denying a need for exorcisms if they are necessary. However, the church expects a good psychological and neurological workup before an exorcism is attempted.
jezic
i might question the wording of the original post slightly. I am fairly sure this was not a rite of exorcism thing.
LouisvilleFan
I've believed in the validity of exorcisms for a long time... ever since I was about 12 years old and read a book from my parents bookshelf titled "The Amityville Horror." That's a scary book for a 12-year-old, but in a way, it was probably the beginning of my conversion to Catholicism. Something about the power of the Rite of Exorcism and simply how the Catholic Church is not only aware of Satan and evil, but fights against it in hand-to-hand combat. There wasn't any of that in our Lutheran church.

Quietfire
Actually, I think this thread should have read, "Do you believe in demonic possessions?" It doesnt seem that there was any exorcism done, but rather a prayerful request to none other than an Archangel, who answered your prayer request. You also mentioned that that place is prayerful, and so I do believe it is being watched over carefully by the angels because of that. If, in fact, someone was possessed, there was no way the angels were going to allow him(or rather...it) to continue to stay on with all those prayerful rosaries and requests. I didnt read a 'typical' Church exorcism here, I read an Archangel doing some buttkicking. Now that is a real exorcism, if the person is free from any neurological disorders. But you didnt explain how it was done. And I dont understand the part about the priests eyes rolling back into his head. Although I have some ideas of what it may have meant, Im not saying anything here. Im off. Pax
infinitelord1
how do you become an exorcist? That would be cool!
LouisvilleFan
Here's an interesting interview with Fr. Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist. The topic is quite fascinating... at least I've always had some interest in exorcism since having the carp scared out of me by reading "Amityville Horror." Exorcisms can be pretty wild though, and very exhausting as sometimes a demon takes hours or days to exorcise, or a person may be possessed by many demons. The interview gets into some of that, along with determining if someone is possessed or if it's mental illness or something they can diagnose otherwise. This is my favorite part ... 30 Days: Don't you ever feel afraid of the demon? Fr. Amorth: Me, for that animal? It is he who should be afraid of me; I act in the name of the Lord of the world. But as for him, he is nothing but God's monkey.

brandelynmarie
Wait! is Fr. Amrth schismatic? Brandelyn Edited February 22, 2006 by brandelynmarie
LouisvilleFan
Father Amorth isn't, but the site I linked to was a Traditional Catholic site. Unfortunately, the only non-schismatic site that seems to have the interview is the Italian magazine "30 Days" (and maybe they're schismatic too? hope not). But it's in Italian, so that doesn't help much Apparently some Traditionalists are using that one part of the interview where Fr. Amorth warns about the evil that has invaded the Vatican to back up their own causes. They fail to note that even though Fr. Amorth testifies that the new rite for exorcisms is ineffective, he himself remains faithful to Rome and is confident in God's promise that the Church will never fall to Satan's attacks. That interview was published in June 2000, so it's not even current. Surely if the Vatican's chief exorcist has had anything to do with it, changes have been made by now. Lil Red
Before you decide something is demonic you must rule out all physical causes. Call a neurologist.
actually, in the book An Exorcist Tells His Story, Fr. Amorth is saying that too many people run around to doctors and delay an exorcism that could've quickly healed the person. then they wait too many years, and the demonic possession has taken deeper roots. btw, he is/was the chief exorcist for the diocese of Rome. and an exorcism can only be performed by an exorcist. if a lay person does it, they are probably just using prayers of deliverance. brandelynmarie
Well said Lil Red! There are some beautiful prayers for deliverence in the back of the 2 books by Fr. Amorth...I had read them recently & was impressed by him...Pace e bene, Brandelyn
