While I'm reading several terrific books now, on Catholicism, discernment, spirituality, etc., I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a good magazine/periodical to which I should subscribe? It would be great it if were discernment based (I'm discerning for the diocesan priesthood), but a general Catholic magazine would be nice as well.

I currently subscribe to Catholic Digest and would like to add others.

Step one-- Cancel your subscription to Catholic Digest, it is the most liberal minded catholic periodical along with St. Anthony Messenger

Step Two- Do as Morostheos says!

Rock On. Really, there isnt any good magazines out there for people discerning.

Vision is released once a year, but of course you have to learn to find the good stuff, and fiddler out the bad.

I would also recommend Our Sunday Visitor. They have a lot of good articles, and i think have touched upon vocations, although rarely.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't realize that Catholic Digest was liberal. The articles I read did not appear as such, but thank you for your opinion.

Pardoning my ignorance, would you please explain what "Morostheos says."

And "Our Sunday Visitor," at inital glance, looks like what I want. Thanks.

I would imagine it is good to keep an eye on the "other side," as it were, since not everyone in a parish will see eye to eye with the Church. I am not a strong advocate of both of the magazines the_rev recommended staying away from, but sometimes it helps to know what the "other side" is thinking. Also, in order to keep a balance it might be good to have a variation of a few things.

First, since I am a strong advocate of it, I would recommend two great apologetical magazines

Envoy Magazine

Also, I highly recommend Crisis which, is general all around good reading.

On the "other side" there are a few that, despite your desire to shy away from them, are good to know about since a lot of people are reading them.

America

St. Anthony Messenger

National Catholic Reporter

Also, I concur with others in the reading of Our Sunday Visitor and would also add, for your own leisure, and not really to subscribe, "homiletic and pastoral review" which gives homiletic ideas but also deals with things that are a concern for today's clergy and tries to deal with them in a very pastoral sense.

Come to think of it, catholic.net had something like this, you can find it here http://www.catholic.net/Catholic Church/Periodicals/mags.html

God Bless

I would enthusiastically recommend the Canadian magazine CATHOLIC INSIGHT. It is by far the most orthodox -- and entertaining, in an angry conservative kind of way -- of the Catholic publications I know of. The only caveat is that if you're not Canadian, you may not appreciate some of the material -- it often deals with Canadian political matters (usually regarding pro-life/pro-family issues).

Traces is a really good Catholic magazine. It's the magazine of Communion and Liberation, but everything in it is good for any Catholic to read, whether you're in the movement or not. They've published some great articles on vocation in the past, too

This is what I (morostheos) say: :)
A couple of good general Catholic ones:

Magnificat (a daily Missalette)
National Catholic Register
Crisis
This Rock
I also recommend First Things if you don't mind something a bit more 'intellectual'.

FIRST THINGS is fantastic! Few publications challenge me and excite me about religion/politics like this one; I always feel as if I have gained something important with every issue. Fr. Neuhaus is the meng.

I really should subscribe; I buy it every month.
