Pipe smoking is healthy!

[quote name='Aloysius' date='Feb 7 2006, 11:18 AM']again, apples and oranges dude.  apples and oranges.  sure they both satisfy your appetite, but there's nothing wrong with doing just one or just the other or both or neither...

i'm more of a runner than a weight lifter.  last time I got on one of those dreadful treadmills (I hate runnin on them cause you're conscious at every minute of your speed and distance, whereas runnin out in the open you're free from that) I ran a mile in 6:10... not too great but that's cause I'm out of shape due to not running since cross country fall 2004

of course all this has nothing to do with the subject of pipe smoking.  i never said it was the only way or the best way, but I would say it's the more contemplative and intellectual way to relax for an evening than weight lifting... though I still don't understand why we are comparing the two things...

How many people get mouth cancer from lifting or running?

How many insurance applications ask you if you've lifted weights or charge you a higher premium if you run or swim?

And I've actually come up with solutions to work problems at the gym.

I still don't know why they're being compared... what makes the attributes of working out a proper scale to judge the attributes of pipe smoking? why must pipe smoking fit to some standard established by working out?

but if you must insist on it, though I still say the comparrison is wholly inadequate, they both have their risks and benefits. when working out, you run the risk of pulling a muscle or getting a hernia or dislodging a soldier (especially if you do it to excess).

and while I'll slightly indulge this odd scale you've created for judging pipe smoking, I refuse to consider the scale of what a Health Insaurance company thinks.

anyway, I've actually come up with solutions to problems while sitting on the toilet (true story!), that doesn't make sitting on the toilet equal to or even comparable to smoking a pipe or working out.

ne quid nimis.

Simple solution...don't run on army bases.

And going back to why I am in "I smell blood" mode....you are claiming that this is a healthy activity because there is a redeeming aspect of stress relief. You know what? People think that continuing to smoke cigarettes is healthier than quitting because if they quit they would gain weight. There, my friend, in one sentence, is about as apple-to-apple you can get on the logic on this subject you have championed.

pipe smoking is in a whole other category than cigarettes in the first place... but anyway if you read my posts you see that the health aspect is not the deciding aspect, the deciding aspect for me is the rich culture, symbolism, and relation to the soul. this is accidental, the fact that it doesn't increase mortality rates and that the stress relieving factors may counter, if not completely balance out, any possible hazard to health.

grown adults who choose to smoke cigarrettes should be left alone unless they want to quit of their own free will. if they don't want to go through the possible weight gain and all that, I don't look down upon them for that (so long as they still enjoy cigarrette smoking... if for some reason they hate it then I would think them weak willed and overly vain for picking weight gain as a reason not to stop smoking)

if you'd expect smokers to have a ten year lower mortality age than non smokers and pipe smokers have a two year higher mortality rate than non-smokers, then it stands to reason that there is something about the culture and affects of pipe smoking that gives them that extra 12 years

I don't know why you smell blood though, my position is not injured here. It may not be popular, but it is strong and supported by a great line of tradition and symbolism in our western culture.

I think an appropriate comparaison is pipe-smoking with coach-patatoism.

Of course there could be the corrolation between the two and the fact that both can be done at the same time...

I personally like smoking the pipe... In the past, in my little part of the world, pipe smoking was considered good because the smoke kept the flies away.

I dont think pipe smokin is the reason they live longer than non-smokers. There are other factors such as beign happily married and having a strong prayer life. Those are more effective in lowering stress than pipe smoking Im sure.

I don't know though... the two smartest people I know are also the only two pipe-smokers I know. I think part of it is the lure pipes have for people who love JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis..... Just a theory. Or at least one of my two pipe-smoking friends smokes for that reason.....
