Well--honestly, in case I didn't mention it before, my parents are not exactly lovers of Catholics....my father in particular. I am not sure how to tell him that I even so much as want to explore the faith, because if I so much as even mention something like that, with the way he thinks of catholics and their teachings in general, he is going to flip his lid. He doesn't really get it, I guess is what I am trying to say.

Any adivce for me? Anyone? You've all been so helpful, and I thank you.

My parents weren't either. And aren't. My dad told me if I became Catholic, it would drive a wedge between me and my family. It did. We can't commune together. It will be an issue when I get married, and when my children are baptized. It will be an issue if I die before they do and I want a Catholic funeral but they don't. It will be an issue if I have children and die and want my children raised Catholic. These are all costs associated with converting.

But, you get to commune with Jesus in a way you can't anywhere else. To me, it's no contest.

That's why I'm Catholic today.

Most people don't love catholic teachings because they simply don't know catholic teaching. :) They have never had any real Catholic education.
For instance, many people think we worship Mary. We don't, but the concepts of dulia and latria has never been explained to them

Sooo very true. I've been dealing with this same kind of stuff with my parents lately... they're finally getting used to the idea that I'm going to be Catholic. It's been rough, but getting better slowly but surely.

This weekend we talked about stuff like... how I'm going to be cut off quite a bit financially. (I'm just 19, so they've been helping with college and whatnot) They said exactly what Sojourner mentioned... how this is going divide our whole family. And I know that... but it's not going to change my mind. My father doesn't think he'd be able to walk me down the aisle when I'm married... my mother is sad that her grandchildren will be raised Catholic someday, etc...

But... if God is for me, then who can be against me? It's gonna be tough, that's guaranteed, but God has your back. :) You have my prayers! And if you ever wanna talk, feel free to pm me!

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

I was also a member of the Episcopal Church for several years. Finally I met a Catholic priest and told him I was tired of being "Brand X" and wanted to join the Catholic Church. I feel like I've come home to be with Jesus Christ.

I am a convert who came from a mother who was staunchly against the Catholic church, even gave me stuff to read to help get Catholics to see the light....well after all the abuse mentally I sought out to find the truth in Christ's church. I thought what better place to start than at a Jewish synagog and take classes on the OT and learn Theology...then I went on my journey (because I wasnt looking to become Jewish just wanted roots of our forefathers and Jesus was a Jew so I wanted to know EVERYTHING I could about his way of life as a Jew) so then I went to several churches trying to see if God was wanting me there....to my surprise it landed me at the doors of the Catholic church....I was telling myself I could not go in "that" church...come on from all I thought I knew as truth from books I read years earlier...well I found that the catholic church had an inquiry night and I was all over it...I was ready with my notebook full of questions, we ended up staying late just to answer all my questions....i went home with sooooo many questions of how could I have missed that, or how could someone misconstrewed (sp) that.....so I started researching this stuff called Apologetics....to my surprise I fell in Love with God and his son Jesus and even our mother Mary .....I enrolled for the next RCIA counting everyday as closer to when I can join in the community at the table of Christ! I was and still am so happy!

I have been attacked by numerous people in my family and outside my family regarding "why that church" and my mother even telling me that in Rev (i dont remember the chap/verse-nor could i find it either later) that God clearly states that catholics are from the pits of hell! I went away bawling! I have since enrolled myself in every Apologetics course I can find, I went to http://www.biblechristiansociety.com/ and the Mary foundation and got all the cd's i could order to help me in the defense of Christ's church.

I often found myself not wanting to say anything when around that side of the family...then at this Christmas I decided why hide the light under a bushel, I stood up and said we must go now because we have to get ready for midnight mass...everyone was silent....but I did get an email from my aunt who then asked me about why we have it at midnight....so I know she was interested.... I had to put in my mind if the martyrs could do it and die for it - Jesus sure is worth dieing for, not that they would do that to me but you know what I mean.....

I often remind myself of the scripture 2 Cor 12:10.... insults for the sake of Christ....

Good luck.....Peace be with you

Ashlee
