Growing in Holiness this Lent

hey folks,
Guess whats a month away....Lent! I am sure some of you guys have an idea of what you will be giving up this Lent. I thought that it would be a great idea to "grow in Holiness" this lent by giving up something that really distracts us from Hearing Our Lord in Our daily walk. I was walking around my campus today and noticed how many people were so distracted with talking on their cellphone instead of enjoying this beautiful day that Our Lord has made. So I was thinking about giving up using my cellphone for Lent or using my computer since there are so many wonderful books on the Saints which would be beneficial to read. Ok I am going to stop blabbering on and suggest that we all look at our lives this Lent and get rid of some of the distractions which maybe hindering us from growing in holiness this Lent.

I think one thing that may be leaving even before lent is my computer forcing me to be online less... It will hopefully give me a chance to do a lot more spiritual reading considering I have quite a number of books that I want to read!

I'm going to abstain from meat and chocolate all Lent. (no more choccies!! :( ) I'm also no longer going to sleep in - more because I want to get into a regular routine - but Lent is a good time to start! And I'm still praying about which devotions I'll emphasise over the period.

It should be great!!

This Lent I am planning on giving more to others. I regularly visit shut ins in nursing homes. You'd be suprised at how many have no families and are totally alone.

Although giving up something like chocolate is ok, I would rather give of my time to show Jesus to others who are suffering as Jesus did for us. It keeps me centered on the meaning of what he sacrificed for me.

Hope everyone had a wonderful day!

Oh I LOVE lent! This year I'm giving up soda, am so addicted to diet coke w/splenda and I know in the cloister I will not get it but once in a blue moon, I am also going to spend more time in prayer in the presence of our lord, so in addition to mass on my days off I'm going to go spend atleast an hour in adoration everyday, and as I do every year, I find one major fault and I will discern which I need to work on most this year and I work on giving it up completely and working on the virtue and if I slip, for instance my first lent in Holy mother church I gave up swearing, I admit it was one of my faults back then and each swear word thought or said I'd put 25 cents in a jar and at the end of lent donate it to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, which helps me to be more aware of my faults, and over come them and also helps another, so I have continued this tradition for lent and advent.

God Bless You!

I am already on a diet, so right now I have had to give up a lot of the yummy foods I am used to eating. That is enough of a challenge. So I haven't been eating much chocolate or meat to begin with, mostly vegetables. I think that if I gave up junk food, it would be kind of redundant and selfish (since i obviously have an agenda).

Last year I gave up coffee and stuck with it. This year, I'm thinking of giving up video games or my iPod. Although I do listen to a lot of Catholic podcasts on my ipod so I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to give up something i use to educate myself about my faith. I also have already cut down on my time spent on the internet.... so i am not sure what to give up

how about we do this before Lent as well.

The call of Christ is constant. He always wants us to draw near to him. As C. S. Lewis says in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle "Higher up and higher in." He is calling us all to himself.

Good idea for lent, but we need to get out of the mentality that we only do this once a year. We need to do it everyday.

i'm going to go on a fast. one meal per day. only water to drink.

i can't fast from my computer because i need to use it for work (online stuff too)

i can't fast from my cell phone because it is my home phone as well.

i picked up the Lenten Magnificat Companion, that has daily fast ideas in it. so i'm going to try to do those daily.

i have been thinking about doing bread and water for some time as well. :)

I do like the tent idea that popped up last year. Is that guy going to do it again?

Last year I gave up shopping and then gave the money to charity but this year I want to work on fasting and give up Diet Coke. I knew a girl in college who gave up diet coke for lent and she told me that if she prayed everytime she thought about DC, she would truly be praying without ceasing. So, I'll give it a shot. Also, last year my roommate gave up smoking and I ended up quitting so you never know...

well I know that it would be difficult for someoen to completely give up using their cellphone and computer. All I am saying is do we really have to use it so much?
I think it would be a great idea if we used it a little less....Like do we really need to use it while walking, or waiting for the bus? just my ten cents

My goal is to give up listening to music especially in the car and while studying...that's going to be super hard for me because I always have music.

Yeah, giving up the computer just wouldn't work...my profs might shoot me!!

And clearly, spending more quality time in prayer, especially before the Blessed Sacrament!
