Did Jesus have a sense of humor?

Sarcasm tends to be more on the mean side... I think Jesus would have had a sense of humor, but I think it would have been more ironic than sarcastic. :idontknow:

God's Errand Girl

I always wonder what the blind man thought when he heard Jesus spit in His hands, mix it with dirt, and then wipe it on the blind man's face.

Unless there's some really deep theological or scientific explanation for Christ's behavior, then His actions in that situation seem pretty humorous..

I never saw humor in that. I saw more of a loving action. Mothers often clean something lovingly from their children using their saliva. One the one hand it is kind of gross but on the other hand it's a motherly thing to do.

I see your point of view and I agree with you as well. (I had never seen this situation from your perspective before.) But I personally still see humor in that situation. I think that the perception of that situation depends on the type of sense of humor that someone has, and I have a pretty uncommon one. :)

Personally, I always thought the following passage involved Jesus playing a practical joke on his disciples:

Matthew 14:22-27
Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."

It seems to me that he had to be expecting that walking across the water to their boat, somewhere between 3-6 a.m., would at least surprise, if not totally freak out the disciples. Wouldn't you get some chills?

But like all good joksters, our Lord knew when to say enough is enough.

oooo I was just thinking about this. Since we are made in the image and likeness of God, it would seem to me that we were given a sense of humor by God, which is a shadow of His own. Also, since Christ became man he would've had a sense of humor since that is part of being human.

I guess it's just one of those things, that for lack of time and resources, the Gospel writers just had to leave it out because it wasn't important. It would be neat to have some humorous moments in which Christ had the apostles rolling, but it's not important for our salvation.

It's the same with Christ's childhood being left out. It would be so cool to have some stories about how he was as a child or even a teenager, but ultimately it wasn't neccessary to record.

And also, consider all the good that has come from the Catholic imagination. What was Christ like as a child? How many paintings have explored this? And how about that scene in "The Passion", where Jesus splashed Mary with water. I love that.
Of course Jesus had a sense of humor. How else do you explain the WWID bracelet he wore?
Thats great...

I think that you can find humor in lot of the stories of Jesus after resurection. How about when Jesus is walking with the two disicples. You can almost get the sense that if it was a play Jesus would be winking at the audiance when he was talking to them. Then he so wonderfully reveals himself in the breaking of the bread.

I also like John 21. Its not really written humorous in a direct sense, but if you think about it. He is pulling the same trick on them as he did when they first met. I can just imagine Jesus laughing his head off at them trying to pull all the fish into the boat. And then seeing Peter jump off the boat and swim to shore would have been a sight!

John 21 is actually my favorite! I feel so over-joyed when ever I read it.
Then you're probably more ironic, I'm thinking... Irony is basically sarcasm except that it's not done nastily... Just going by our dictionary's def, though

God has a thoroughly developed sense of irony... He shows it to me all the time...

Well, I think it was that, well, since He's God, he told lots of jokes, but nobody got them. They were all above their heads. Since nobody got them, they figured it wasn't worth writing them down. My guess is that he told lots of Chuck Norris jokes and Elephant jokes.
