How to deal with ulta-conservatives...

prose

Recommended Posts

Okay, if I was forced to pick a "camp", I would consider myself conservative (although I am of the opinion that Catholic is Catholic. period).

Anyways, I know some people who are ultra-conservative. They believe in conspiracies in the Church, that the world is ending, and are absolutely not flexible on ANYTHING in conversation. I would almost consider them pre-Vatican II like.

I don't want to say they are wrong about anything, my problem has nothing to do with right and wrong.

My quandry is how to deal with the fact that they aren't very prudent. They are judgemental of others in the faith who aren't just like them, and ultra-judgemental of people outside of the faith (although they swear they aren't). They act almost as though Catholicism is exclusive, not inclusive.

I mean, I understand trying to help people in their faith walk. I am a youth minister for goodness sakes!! But to treat them differently because they haven't grown to accept or understand my beliefs I think is wrong.

AND they both have EXTREMELY domineering personalities, and when I try to be gentle in my approach, they stomp me down. If I am more aggressive, then they consider me touched by Satan. (because that would be the only reason I would react that way).

I just get frustrated :ohno: and I'm not sure what to do.

Extra ecclesiam nulla salus

I practice this, but i do not preach it.

I hate exclusivity. In some things i am though. I don't like it When Non-Catholics Recieve the Eucharist.

I Don't gossip about non-catholics simply because they are non-catholic becasue i don't know any practicing catholics anyway.

I do not look down on others.

I think you just have to be as patient as possible, and leave it at that. If they can't discuss something with civility, tell them that you're willing to talk, but not if they are going to be uncharitable. They may hiss and moan. But they'll learn someday. There's a certain comfort in closing yourself in on the Truth, and ignoring the virtues. You can justify it by saying you are just obeying the Truth. But, eventually, you realize you're just a prideful person. I've been there. Believe me.

Of course, non-Catholics shouldn't receive the Eucharist!!

I know you aren't any of those things. I just don't know how to deal with someone who is. I guess I was venting more than anything. This should be in Open Mic. Whoops. :pinch:

Deal with them the same way you'd deal with liberals.

If they refuse to listen to reason, shake their dust from your feet and move on.
Say a prayer from them.

Some people will simply refuse to use common sense or listen to reason, so it's generally a waste of time to argue with them.

don't call them pre-vatican ii Catholics. prior to vatican ii the Church was not full of conspiracy nut cases full of hate and lacking respect or compassion.

As Catholics we are called to hate sin. A part of that is Hatred for Lies. And False man made relegions. This is why we are called to hate other relegions, But NOT other People.

We have a lot of protesters on campus trying to convence us we're all going to hell. Ultra-conservative, very loud. We mostly just ignore them. A few kids will get into shouting matches about Bible verses, but I think the best thing is the counterprotest. Kids just stand across the street with signs that represent the other side of the argument. Granted that is only really useful in protests, but that's most of my experience with really really ultra conservatives that won't admit defeat.

Just out of curiosity, would you apply this to liberal protesters, too?

(It seems that overall, liberals are a lot more into the whole "protest" thing than conservatives.)
