Annunciation, if I'm honest, is not to my tastes. Its far too overwhelming. Perhaps that is the statement the church is supposed to be making and I wouldn't criticise its artisans for so crafting it. Byzantine worship is geared to overwhelm, part of it its aim is to engage and engulf the senses and the extravagant use of colour agrees with the Palaeologan principles of church decor: Light used in as many tints as possible to reflect the Divine Light of the Godhead. Nonetheless, perhaps my Western upbringing has in someways formed me in a manner which means I prefer ecclesiastical art to carry with it an air of noble simplicity.

I love Byzantine iconography no doubt but I believe its vividness is at its best when contrasted with something a little less striking such as what you find in the churches below. Not neccessarily plainer or any less breathtaking but more reserved and more contrasting. In my opinion Annunciation is just too much of white on white, there needs to be a bit more white on black, the blue is just too strong. Yet, as I said it agrees with the conventions of Palaeologan art in its arresting and inescapable qualitiy but for me the churches of Rhomaion Ravenna in their vintage are Byzantium at its best:
