Imprimatur: The Seal Of Approval?

i am very cautious about what i read, and pick up and have always worried about looking and making sure that it has the imprimatur on it.

i know that the imprimatur is a type of seal of approve saying that its loyal to Church's teachings...and has been approved by some official (im guessign here)

however i have heard ppl say that you can't even sometimes trust those either...

who checked and grants the imprimaturs?

and can we trust it whenever we see that seal of approval?

God bless!

lol, who you kidding?

The imprimatur is a permission from the Bishope to print a certain book on the faith. The Nihil Obstat is the stamp that there is nothing against any of the dogmas or docrtines of the church.

You can pretty much trust every imprimatur and Nihil Obstat given before 1963. However, since 1963, you have to be careful to see whether the imprimatur was given by a faithful bishop or one that had an agenda contrary to the teachings of the Church. Nowadays it's more reliable to stick with certain publishers, Ignatius Press, TAN, Charis, Basilica Press, Franciscan University Press, Our Sunday Visitor, Neumann, Daughters of St. Paul, and Sophia are all book publishers that can be trusted.

Good Luck.
