cmotherofpirl
THis is the result of liberality and laxness of their previous bishops.

cmotherofpirl
THe new Bishops have their work cut out for them. Changing the rules will not make a difference, the Church will not return any priest to the Church if he left to get married.
vianney
you know the funny thing cmon, if you ask the guys in my seminary what they think we are ALL for celibacy and ALL in line with the pope. Those priests who signed the petition are all from the seminary days of the seventy's. Our seminary sent a letter to Bishop Gregory which had all 82 of our signatures supporting priestly celibacy and advocating it. Celibacy is such a beautiful thing and i think it is so arogant for so many ppl to think they know better then ppl like st augustine, aquinas, vianney, etc...Give me a break

cmotherofpirl
Virginia priests back celibacy Washington, DC, Sep. 29 (CWNews.com) Ninety priests of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, have sent a letter to Bishop Wilton Gregory, the president of the US bishops' conference, giving their strong support to the discipline of priestly celibacy. The Arlington priests' letter comes as a response to a previous letter, signed by priests of the Milwaukee archdiocese, calling for an end to mandatory celibacy. The Virginia priests reject the argument that optional celibacy would attract more young men to the priesthood. "What will inspire more vocations is celibacy lived well, not celibacy set aside," they write. The Arlington priests write that were saddened by the public statement from Milwaukee, and argue that "lessening sacrifice never inspires men to offer their lives to Christ." They argue that "continued discussion of this issue only confuses the faithful and deprives the Church of the clarity needed to inspire vocations." Although the authors of the priests' letter stress that it "in no way represents a vote by the priests of Arlington," the 90 signers represent 60 percent of the priests in that diocese. In a cover letter to Bishop Gregory, accompanying the letter signed by the 90 priests, Father John DeCelles-- the Arlington priest who organized the effort-- explained his hope that the public statement "will assist the faithful who are so often confused by the discordant voices among the clergy." © Copyright 2003 Domus Enterprises. Muschi
I think the cause of the decline in priestly/religious vocations is not due to God who calls them of course, but rather: LIBERALISM!!!! Why bother having to live a life under at least some scrutiny if the secular people advocate liberalism as well? What is the point of becoming a Priest today when so much of the New Age has crept into the Church and nuns no longer wear their habits which used to set them apart at one time. I mean, if we are all gonna look alike, why bother with having to lead a holier life if in the end we are all "the same" anyway? When people lose their faith in our priests because so many of them have lost their faith in turn, what really, can one expect? -Muschi
JP2Iloveyou
you make a good point about the habits. When I was in Lincoln, I think ten of my young female friends decided to enter a convent. Every one of them entered where they wear a habit. The solid orders are flourishing, kind of like the solid dioceses and vocations to the priesthood. I mean, look at the good, orthodox dioceses in the United States. or Easter Europe as opposed to Western Europe. Lincoln, Arlington, Peoria, Sioux Falls, I could go on and on. I did some research, the Diocese of Lincoln, NE has 34 seminarians for 89,412 Catholics for a ratio of 2,630 Catholics to one seminarian. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has 25 seminarians for 685,004 Catholics for a ration of 27,400 Catholics to one seminarian. Lincoln has 160 priests for for a Catholic to priest ration of 559 to 1. Milwaukee, has 738 priests, 188 of which are either retired or working outside the Archdiocese, but we'll county them anyway. That comes out to be a Catholic to priest ration of 928 to 1. If Lincoln kept the same ratios they have now with the population Milwaukee has, they would have 1226 priests and 268 seminarians. Believe me, there is not one priest in the Diocese of Lincoln that would be caught dead signing one of those letters to the USCCB. Don't give me the garbage that there are no vocations. Maybe if these priests would take a little more time encouraging men to enter the seminary and fulfilling their priestly duties and a little less time trying to relax celibacy rules, we wouldn't have a vocations shortage. cmotherofpirl
AMEN And don't forget the diocese in Denver , they got Chaput. And the new Bishop in Louisana is great, he is taking on the "catholic" politicians.

frozencell
Personally I don't see a problemn with a priest marrying. It's Biblical to marry. ;)
cmotherofpirl
ACtually if you read the New Testament , only Peter (I think) was married and he went off to Rome. Paul said celibacy was preferable.
