I am such an unemployed bum

So, now I'm back from my vacation and it's time to get to work regarding finding jobs and stuff. I have a few things to motivate me:

- Living with my family is starting to get old
- I am broke
- I need something to do

There's been significantly more pressure on the home front to do something constructive with my time and find a job. My mom doesn't like the fact that I stay up so late, but I don't have anything to get up for so it doesn't make any sense to wake up that early. Plus Daily Mass is at noon!

It would be so much easier if I knew what God wanted me to do with my life. I majored in Communications & Media Studies so it would make sense for me to do something like journalism, advertising, or media arts. But I'm not so sure if that's what God is calling me to do.

I've also thought about spending a year doing missionary work. I REALLY like that idea...but I'm not sure where to start or which organizations to look into. Plus applying for things makes me really self-conscious and I worry that I'm not qualified to do anything at all.

I'm also not sure where I want to live. I really like living in NJ because there's a lot of Catholic activity going on. All of my friends are in Baltimore + DC though. It's really confusing.

Please pray that God leads me to wherever He wants me to be!

This probably isn't the kind of missionary work you mean, but you might look into the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS)...it's a missionary organization that sends graduates to colleges to lead Bible studies and stuff...usually they want single people, but they take married folks on occasion...and the training sessions are under people like Scott Hahn.

I don't think working @ EWTN (or any TV station) would be for me... at least if it involved TV production. I never liked taking TV or film production classes because I'm not a visual kind of person. Plus the only person I know in Alabama is a cloistered nun, so I'm sure I probably wouldn't get to see her.

I have looked into that. Even though I just got out of college, I might be too cynical, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to apply. Sometimes when you're filling out the application + writing the essay questions, it helps you figure out whether it's for you or not.

I have checked out their response directory... They really do have a lot of listings! There are so many to choose from that it's hard to even pick a handful to apply to... I guess I have to figure out what type of work I'm looking for

Do you have a spiritual director or friend who knows your like/dislikes well? They could be of great help for you in this time of discernment.

Prayers!

Actually, I think most of those missionaries are new grads.

talk to the local paper about being a stringer . . . may not pay well (or at all) but you'd get out in the community and keep your byline active

yeah... I'd imagine they'd still have retained some degree of optimism and idealism from their college years though. I became really jaded and anti-school my junior/senior years and got really cynical about education and campus life so I'm not sure I'd be a good influence. But it would be different because I wouldn't have to go to classes and all those other things I hate, so I'd be free to do full-time evangelization, so it might work out.

I had a spiritual director, and he was absolutely wonderful. Then I moved back home and now I'm not one of his parishioners anymore :sadder: I suppose I should find a new one
